3. A simple sentence contains one independent clause. Example: "The cat is sleeping." A compound

dog is barking."

4. A compound-complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent
clause. Example: "When the sun set, the stars appeared, and we sat by the fire."

5. Compound sentence: "She finished her homework quickly, and she went out to play."
