The activity that we had has something to

do with our topic for today! which is Direct
and Indirect Object. I know some of you
are already familiar with the topic. Let's
know more about it and master it. But,
before that, let us know first the objectives
of the lesson.

c. Presentation (Establishing a At the end of this lesson, the students

purpose for the lesson) should be able to:

The teacher will let the students read the a. Define and differentiate Direct and
learning objectives. Indirect Object

b. Examine the sentences and identify the

Direct and Indirect Object
c. Construct their own sentences using
Direct and Indirect Object.

d. Presenting examples/ instances of

the lesson

The teacher will proceed to the

Powerpoint to discuss direct and indirect
objects.

Our lesson for today is about direct and

indirect objects. But before that lets
review how to identify the subject, verb
and the Object in a sentence.

subject - the one performing the action

and the one the sentence is about
verb - it is the action being performed by
the subject
The Object of a sentence is the person or
thing that receives the action of the verb.

Terry carried out the trash.

In this sentence:

'Terry' is the subject: it is the one

performing the action and the one the
sentence is about
'carried' is the verb: it is the action being
performed by the subject
'trash' is the object: it is 'what' is being
carried and it is 'what' the subject is doing
something to
Let's look at another one:

They played the drums.

In this sentence:

'They' is the subject: the one performing

the action and the one the sentence is
about
'played' is the verb: it is the action being
performed by the subject
'drums' is the object: it is 'what' is being
played and it is 'what' the subject is doing
something to

e.Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills

The teacher will proceed to the topic

Direct and indirect object.

Since you now know how to identify

object in a sentence let's now proceed to
our topic. Let's define and differentiate
direct and indirect object.

Direct object is a noun, pronoun, or a

noun phrase that receives the action of a
verb or shows the result of the action. It
answers the question “What?” or
“Whom?” after an action verb. If you can
find the subject and the verb in a
sentence, then you can find the direct
object easily by using the formula,

Subject + verb + what or who = Direct

Object

Example:
“John and Avery played cricket.”

Let's identify the direct object using the

Answer:
given formula.
``What did John and Avery play?”
“John and Avery played cricket.” In
this sentence, “John and Avery” is the
subject, “play” is the verb and last
formulate question using what or who to
be able to find the direct object
Anyone who can formulate a question
using what or who?

you will get the direct object of the

sentence by answering the question you
made.

CRICKET (DIRECT OBJECT)

Do you understand?

Another example.

.
He repaired my car.

He - subject
repaired - verb
Car - Direct object

Let's test if you understand who can

answer the question in front?

DIRECTION: Read the paragraph below

and encircle the direct object.

It was the middle of the night when he ANSWER

came. He knocked loudly on the door. I
put down my book and answered the It was the middle of the night when he
door. His long hair covered his eyes and came. He knocked loudly on the door. I
his hat was worn askew. He pulled a box put down my book and answered the
from his coat pocket; he gave me the box door. His long hair covered his eyes and
with a jerky motion and left. I opened it his hat was worn askew. He pulled a box
and found a note. The next day, I read my from his coat pocket; he gave me the box
father the note, which simply said ''good with a jerky motion and left. I opened it
evening.'' and found a note. The next day, I read
my father the note, which simply said
''good evening.'
Since you now mastered how to identify
direct object let's proceed to indirect
object.
Indirect Object
A sentence must always have a direct
object first, for an indirect object to exist.
In other words, an indirect object cannot
exist in a sentence without a direct object.
An indirect object is a noun or pronoun
that is affected by the action. It would be
correct to state that an indirect object is
the recipient of the direct object.

Examples:
He sent me a present.

In this sentence, “present” is the direct

object and “me” is the indirect object. You
can also note that “me” is the recipient of
the direct object. So we can ask the
question “for whom did he send a
present?” to know the indirect object. An
indirect object always answers the
questions ‘to whom’, ‘for whom’ or ‘for
what.’ etc.

She gave it to me.

I told my teacher a lie.

He bought a present for her mother.

She gave her English notes to me.

Let's test it

1. She sent her friend an email . ANSWER:

2. Sally will help you with your 1. Her friend
housework. 2. you
3. He gave them a bag full of money. 3. them

Can you see the difference class?
