TOPIC: BASIC KITCHEN LAYOUT


KITCHEN LAYOUT - refers to the shape that is made by the arrangement of the countertop, major appliances, and
storage areas.

THREE GENERAL FUNCTIONS OF KITCHEN LAYOUT

1. The Food Storage Station


2. The Preparation/Cooking Station
3. The Clean-Up Station

DIFFERENT SHAPES STYLES OF KITCHEN LAYOUT

U-Shaped Kitchen - layout plan which is perfect for getting many things and needing a lot of space. This requires
three full walls of the room.

L-Shaped Kitchen - layout plan which is nice for a kitchen where a lot of entertaining might be done. This shape
allows room for tables and chairs at one end, and eliminates traffic.

Single-Line Kitchen - layout which is a good solution for a narrow kitchen. A wall needs to be at least three yards
long of uninterrupted space to make this shape contain everything it needs.

Galley Kitchen - layout that makes great use of space, and one that many professional chefs prefer.

Island Kitchen - layout plan features as an independent island that can face the living room or dining area, allowing
socialization between rooms.

TOPIC: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS


SAFETY PRECAUTIONS - a precaution taken to ensure that something is safe and not dangerous. This helps to
prevent and reduce accidents and hazards, which in turn supports employee well-being and effectiveness in the
workplace.

SIX SAFETY PRECAUTION/REMINDERS IN THE KITCHEN

1. Repair all faulty appliances


2. Service and clean all kitchen appliances
3. Unplug small kitchen appliances
4. Never touch any appliances with wet hands
5. Do not overload outlets
6. Never let the children play in the kitchen

HAZARD AND RISK IN THE WORKPLACE

HAZARD - the term used to describe something that has the potential to cause harm. It includes a dangerous
phenomenon, substance, activity or human condition.

RISK - refers to the uncertainty that something may result in loss or damage; it also measures the likelihood of certain
harmful effects in specific circumstances.

WORKPLACE - specific location or environment where individuals engage in tasks, responsibilities and perform
their work duties.
TYPES OF WORKPLACE HARZARDS

SAFETY HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by insufficient and inadequate machine guards, unsafe
workplace conditions, and unsafe work practices.

BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and
parasites.
CHEMICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by solid, liquid, vapor or gaseous chemicals, dust or
mist.
ERGONOMICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by anatomical, physiological, and psychological
demands on the worker such as repetitive and forceful movements, extreme temperatures and awkward postures.

PHYSICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by noise, vibration, energy, weather, electricity,
radiation, and pressure.

PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by low job control, poor support, lack of role
clarity, poor management of organizational change and inadequate rewards and recognition which mainly cause stress
to a worker.

MECHANICAL HAZARDS - unsafe working conditions caused by dangerous goods, electricity, machinery,
equipment, pressure vessel, fork lifts, cranes and hoists.

ASPECTS OF MAINTAINING PRODUCTIVE WORKPLACE

HEALTH - physical and emotional well-being, especially that associated with normal functioning of the human body,
absent of disease or pain.

SAFETY - condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

SECURITY - state of being or feeling secure and free from danger or threat; protection and resilience against,
potential harm (or other unwanted coercion).

DIFFERENT PRODUCTIVE EQUIPMENT AND MEASURES IN A WORKPLACE

protection.
OVEN MITTS - commonly known as oven glove a thermal insulated or usually worn in the kitchen to easily protect
the wearer's hand from hot objects such as ovens, stoves and cookware.
APRON - a protective or decorative garment usually of cloth, plastic, or leather usually tied around the waist and used
to protect clothing or adorn a costume.
ANTI-SLIP SHOES - a shoe designed to reduce the risk of slipping or falling due to slippery or wet surfaces also
known as slip-resistant shoes.
SLIP- RESISTANT MAT - a mat made from various materials such as rubber, vinyl, polycarbon, or gel. These mats
are made with anti-slip properties that help to provide traction and grip on smooth or slippery surfaces.
