St. Michael ‘Long’, ‘Mid’ and ‘Short’ Prayers: .. .. A brief explanation
As the reader is indubitably aware, the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel was composed by .. for the protection of holy Mother Church from Her enemies, and which is typically
Pope Leo XIII after he received a terrible vision whilst saying Mass on the 13th of October, appended to the Holy Rosary (and which is reproduced above). This beloved short prayer

specifics however affirm that such did indeed occur and, further, that it was very shortly there- ‘Long’ and ‘Short’ iterations are indulgenced in the, to date, last published version of the

inspired by the Holy Ghost, penned the famous prayer to the Prince of Heaven. Importantly there is a further version, sometimes confused with and referred to as the ‘Long’
This original prayer is today better known as the ‘Long Prayer’ and it is of a most potent and prayer though which is more accurately known as a Prayer of Exorcism, taken from the
pugnacious composition: unyielding and invigorating and not for the faint of heart. It quotes Rituale Romanum, and which is only to be recited by the clergy and not under any

A truncated version, which maintains some of the original language & verse, is known as the incantations of exorcism throughout; not the simple V/. & R/. as present in the original
‘Middle’ version and this was published in the 1902 edition of the Rituale Romanum. The prayer, but rather direct commands imposed on the diabolical, and which are made only with
‘Short’ prayer is the one we all know and love and this is Leo’s 1886 abbreviation, which he Priestly authority. In 1985 then Cdl. Ratzinger, as head of the CDF, issued a decree re-
ordered be recited through-out the Church, after Low Mass (as part of the Leonine Prayers), .. affirming that this is only to be recited by clerics.

Benedicite Dominum omnes Angeli eius : Bless the Lord, all ye His Angels, you who are mighty in strength:
potentes virtute, facientes verbum illius, ad audiendam vocem sermonum eius. execute His word, hearkening to His spoken word. (Ps 102)
Benedicite omnes virtutes eius: ministri eius, qui facitis voluntatem eius. Bless the Lord, all ye his hosts: you ministers of his that do his will. (Ps 102)
Benedic anima mea Domino, et noli oblivisci omnes retributiones eius. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all He hath done for thee. (Ps 102)
Qui redimit de interitu vitam tuam : Who redeemeth thy life from destruction:
qui coronat te in misericordia et miserationibus. who crowneth thee with mercy and compassion. (Ps 102)

Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk:
et conculcabis leonem et draconem. • and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. (Ps 90)
