Exercise 1
1 a) How does Mrs. Gandhi describe a person who looks upon his fellow-men and

the world with friendly eyes?

Ans- Mrs. Gandhi describes such a person is truly human and civilized and she says
that an individual is who not only cares for just fellow humans but all creation
including plants, animal life.

b) Were Indians aware of this even in ancient times? Give an example to prove this.
Ans- Yes, Indian’s were aware of this in ancient times as Emperor Ashoka, who
ruled about 22 centuries ago, is an example of this awareness. He carved edicts on
rocks and iron pillars that defined a king's duty not just to protect citizens and
punish wrongdoers but also to preserve animal life and forest trees. Ashoka also
forbade the killing of many species for sport or food.

2 a) The environment around us has been destroyed. What are the three examples
given?

Ans- the three examples are-

• Pollution
• Destruction of forests
• Wiping out of wildlife
b) It is not only the environment but man also who is in danger.

i) What dangers face him when he is poor?

Ans- when he is poor, he faces dangers such a malnutrition and disease.

poverty limits access to basic necessities like food and healthcare. ii) What

dangers face him when he is politically weak? Ans- When he is politically

weak, he is threatened by war iii) What dangers face him- when he is rich?

Ans- When he is rich, he faces dangers from pollution brought about by his own
prosperity.

3 a) Mention the ways in which the poor are compelled to spoil the environment.

Ans-

• Poaching animals
• Despoiling the vegetation
• Combing the forest for food and livelihood.

b) How can poverty be removed?

Ans- Poverty can be removed by providing employment and purchasing power for
the daily necessities of the poor, such as those living in or near jungles, enabling
them to sustain themselves without exploiting the environment.

4) What have Indians down the ages respected?

Ans- People have respected the spirit of detachment and renunciation, respect of
spiritual values has been a significant part of Indian culture.

5 a) When can a program of population control be successful?


Ans- A program of population control can be successful when it is combined

with education and a visible rise in the standard of living. b) Why do some

poor people want big families?

Ans- Some poor people want big families because, in their economic situation,

every child is seen as an earner and a helper 6) Natural resources are being

depleted.

a) How are the developed countries responsible for this?

Ans- Developed countries are responsible for the depletion of natural resources
because, despite having a smaller fraction of the world’s population, they
consume the bulk of the world's production of minerals, fossil fuels, and other
resources. b) How are the developing countries responsible for this?

Ans- Developing countries are responsible for the depletion of natural resources
because their populations, in their struggle for survival and livelihood, often
exploit natural resources unsustainably, leading to environmental degradation.
