FEEDS
ORGANIC AQUACULTURE FEEDS

➢ Organic aquaculture feeds are specially formulated for fish

farming, meeting organic standards by avoiding synthetic
chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, and GMOs.
➢ Aimed at sustainability, animal welfare, and safety, these feeds
reduce environmental impact, protect water quality, and support
the natural health of aquatic species.
➢ They also help conserve wild fish populations and meet
consumer demand for eco-friendly seafood, promoting a more
ethical, sustainable aquaculture system.
ORGANIC AQUAFEED
• refers to any duly certified complete feed
prepared on farm or manufactured by duly
certified organic and registered feed
mill/processing plant, distributed and traded
for organic farming of aquatic animals
which are raised for human consumption.
COMMERCIAL ORGANIC
AQUAFEEDS
• refer to those manufactured by companies,
whose primary business is aquatic animal
feedstuff production.
FARM-MADE ORGANIC AQUAFEED
• those made for the exclusive use of a
particular farming activity, not for a
commercial scale or profit; feeds made by
individuals or groups of individuals who are
primarily farmers.
• Organic aquafeeds are
made using safe, organic
ingredients and are
processed to preserve their
organic integrity. If
equipment is used for both
organic and non-organic
products, it must be
thoroughly cleaned before
processing organic feeds.
ESSENTIAL COMPOSITION AND
QUALITY FACTORS

Organic aquafeeds should be prepared from

sustainable and quality organic raw materials and
shall provide adequate nutritional requirements to
produce acceptable performance to crustaceans,
fish and mollusks reared in aquaculture farms/ponds
and other culture facilities.
ESSENTIAL COMPOSITION AND
QUALITY FACTORS

RAW MATERIALS
Sourcing Standards
• Raw materials must come from certified organic and registered
local suppliers.
• Imported raw materials must also be certified and registered
organic.
Nutritional Requirements
• Raw materials should provide essential nutrients: protein, amino
acids, lipids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
ESSENTIAL COMPOSITION AND
QUALITY FACTORS

RAW MATERIALS
Safety Standards
• Raw materials containing molds (sources of aflatoxin) are prohibited.
Use of Non-Organic Feed
• A limited percentage (maximum 20% dry matter) of non-organic
feed can be used during early development stages of organic
aquaculture, calculated per production cycle.
Carnivorous Aquaculture Animal Feed
• Feed derived from whole fish caught in sustainable fisheries is
allowed, with a maximum inclusion of 60%.
The following substances are prohibited in
the products:

a) farm animal by-products (e.g. abattoir i) artificial preservatives;

waste) of ruminants;
j) artificial coloring agents;
b) slaughter products of the same species;
k) genetically modified organisms (GMO) or
c) all types of manure; their products;
d) feed subjected to solvent extraction (e.g. l) wild fish juveniles; and
hexane) or the addition of other chemical
m) veterinary drugs (e.g. antibiotics).
agents;
e) crystalline synthetic amino acid isolates;
f) urea and other synthetic nitrogen
compounds;
g) synthetic growth promoters or stimulants;
h) synthetic appetite stimulants;
Feed Additives, processing aid and
other ingredients
➢ Permitted substances used as feed additives, processing aids and other
ingredients such as: Calcium carbonate, Calcium sulphate, Oyster shell
Ground limestone, Sodium chloride Potassium chloride, etc.
Additives and processing aids shall be used under the following conditions:
• Maintain the product’s nutritional value.
• Enhance its stability and shelf-life.
• Improve composition, consistency, and appearance.
• Are essential for producing the product, with no viable alternatives.
• Are used in the minimum necessary amount.
• it does not in any major way detrimentally affect the environment;
• Do not deceive the consumer concerning the nature, substance, and
quality of the food.
FINAL PRODUCT

• The final product must

be nutritionally
balanced, palatable,
digestible, water
stable, storage stable
and has the proper
size and texture for
target/cultured
species.
• The final product shall
meet all the
requirements
enumerated:
HYGIENE, PACKAGING,
LABELING, AND
REQUIREMENTS
HYGIENE AND HANDLING
• The final product must be
free from foreign materials,
contaminants, harmful
microorganisms, and any
substances posing a risk to
aquaculture species or
human health.
HYGIENE, PACKAGING,
LABELING, AND
REQUIREMENTS
PACKAGING
• The product shall be packed
in sacks, bags, barrels,
boxes, bins, cans, canisters
or any other containers for
feeds and/or feed ingredients
that are clean and free from
any foreign matters or
contaminants.
HYGIENE, PACKAGING, LABELING,
AND REQUIREMENTS
LABELING
• All containers of organic aquafeeds and related products must
have a complete label or tag.
• Labels should be securely attached or printed on the container,
allowing the full content to be read.
• Labels must be in English (legible and clear) but may have
translations in other languages if English is the primary
language.
• Brand names and feed types must be in the largest font and
placed prominently on the label's front.
• Labels must not have false, misleading advertisements or
claims, including those suggesting the feed suits all purposes.
• Labels must show the net weight in kilograms and the
production plant. Phrases like “50 kilos gross” or “50 kilos when
packed” are not permitted.
LABELING
• Labeling must use and shall be placed on a conspicuous place on the
container or package showing the following information;
a) Brand or trademark
b) Product's generic name, type/class, and form
c) Recommended species and life stage
d) Guaranteed analysis
e) Full list of ingredients
f) Company name and address
g) Storage conditions
h) Control/Batch/Lot number

METHOD OF SAMPLING

Sampling for physico-chemical examination must follow FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius

Commission Sampling Plans for Prepackaged Foods. A sample lot (N) refers to a product
group under similar conditions, with bulk containers or individual feed sacks serving as
sample units.

Method of physical examination

• Samples taken for physical examination shall be assessed by persons trained in such
examination and using procedures elaborated:
Proximate analysis and nutritional composition
• Determination of ash - Determination of feed water stability
• 3Determination of crude fat - Determination of heavy metals
• Determination of crude fiber - Determination of pesticides
• Determination of crude protein - Determination of veterinary drugs in feeds
• Determination of moisture
• Determination of aflatoxins B1 content
• Determination of feed floatability
DEFECTIVES

The sample unit shall be considered as defective when it exhibits any

of the properties defined below.

• Foreign matter
