Rules of Volleyball

1. Objective: The goal is to score points by hitting the ball over the net and
into the opponent's court.
2. Teams: Each team has six players on the court.
3. Match Format:
o Matches are usually played in a best-of-five sets format.
o A set is won by the first team to reach 25 points, with a minimum lead
of 2 points.
o If a fifth set is played, it is typically played to 15 points, again
requiring a 2-point lead.
4. Rally Scoring: Points can be scored by either team on every serve,
regardless of who served.
5. Rotations: Teams must rotate clockwise every time they win the serve from
the opponent. Each player must play in each of the six positions.
6. Hits: Each team can hit the ball a maximum of three times before returning
it to the opponent. Common hits include:
o Bump (Pass): Receiving the serve or a hit.
o Set: Preparing the ball for an attacker.
o Spike (Attack): Hitting the ball over the net forcefully.
7. Service:
o The game starts with a serve from behind the end line.
o The server must strike the ball to send it over the net into the
opponent’s court.
o The serve must not touch the net (unless it goes over) and must land
within the court boundaries.
8. Faults: A point is awarded to the opposing team if:
o The ball lands out of bounds.
o A player touches the net.
o A player crosses the center line.
o The ball is held or carried.
o The team exceeds three hits before returning the ball.
9. Substitutions: Teams may substitute players, typically allowing a limited
number per set.
10.Timeouts: Each team is allowed a set number of timeouts per set (usually
two).

Player Positions

1. Outside Hitter (Left Side Hitter):

o Primary attacker, strong in both offense and defense.
o Receives serves and plays at the net.
2. Right Side Hitter (Opposite Hitter):
o Positioned opposite the setter.
o Focuses on attacking and blocking, and often plays defense.
3. Setter:
o The playmaker who sets up offensive plays.
o Distributes the ball to hitters and often plays both front and back row.
4. Middle Blocker:
o Primarily responsible for blocking opposing attacks.
o Quick and agile for effective net play and quick attacks.
5. Libero:
o A defensive specialist, wearing a different colored jersey.
o Cannot attack the ball above the net or serve.
o Substitutes freely for back-row players and focuses on defense.
6. Defensive Specialist:
o Similar to the libero, but can serve and attack.
o Primarily focuses on defense and can replace front-row players.
