Content:
Poetry: Descriptions and Imagery

Descriptive words help a writer create vivid mental images for readers, painting scenes,
emotions, or sensory experiences through language. They can evoke specific emotions or
moods, adding depth to the poem. Descriptive words provide specific details that enhance the
reader's understanding and engagement with the poem. They can describe physical
characteristics, actions, or even abstract concepts in a tangible way.

Example:
"Song"

Behold the beautiful land, Honey’s in the forest


The young hills and the corn; Blue fish in the sea;
In the green river’s womb The ash gray of the clearings
Children are born. Grows grain for me.

Discussion Questions:
1. Name the character/s that play or move.
2. What feeling do you think is expressed in the poem? Cite a text or a line.
3. What are the things described in the poem?
4. What are some descriptive words you found?
5. How did the descriptive words help you in analyzing the poem?

Possible Answers:
1. The characters that play or move are river, children, forest (trees) and fish.
2. The feeling expressed in the text is admiration or amazement.
“Behold the beautiful land.”
3. The things described in the poem are land, hills, corn, river, children, fish, and clearings.
4. Some of the descriptive words found in the poem are beautiful and young.
5. The descriptive words in the poem helped me understand better the message of it.
