• Grade 2
1. The distance between 2 poles is 6 m. What is the distance between the 1st
and 5th pole? (Please show poles/trees in question)

• Grade 3
2. The distance between 2 trees is 7 m; What is the distance between 1st and
11th tree?

3. Eight people in the party do handshake with each other. How many total
handshakes are done?

4. There are poles erected every 8m of a road. The distance between the first
and the last pole is 120 m; How many total poles are there?

5. The distance between first and last tree is 180 and distance between 2
trees is 9 ; Find the number of trees.

• Grade 4
6. Distance between 2 trees is 15 m ; find the distance between 1st and 200th
tree.

• Grade 5
7. Distance between 3 boys is 6 feet; find the distance between the 21st boy
and the 42nd boy.
ANSWERS AND HINTS

1. Ans. 24
(Hint: 5-1 = 4 gaps;
1 gap = 6 m
Therefore 4 gaps = 24 m)

2. Ans. 70
(Hint: 11-1 = 10 gaps;
1 gap = 7 m
Therefore 10 gaps = 70 m)

3. Ans. 28 (7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1)
(Hint: 1st person will do handshake with rest 7; 2nd will rest 6 and so on)

4. Ans. 16
(Hint: Total distance = total gaps
Number of gaps = 120 ÷8 = 15 gaps
Now 2 poles will have 1 gap
3 poles will have 2 gaps
Therefore 15 gaps will be between 16 poles (1st pole and 16th pole)

5. Ans. 21
(Hint: Total distance = total gaps
Number of gaps = 180 ÷ 9 = 20
Now, 2 trees will have 1 gap
3 trees will have 2 gaps
Therefore 20 gaps will be between 21 trees (1st tree and 21st tree)
6. Ans. 2985
(Hint: Hint: 200-1 = 199 gaps;
1 gap = 15 m
Therefore 15 gaps = 199 x 15 = 2985)

7. Ans. 63 feet
(Hint: 3 boys will have 2 gaps between them
Therefore distance between each boy will be 6 ÷ 2 = 3 feet
Gaps between 42nd and 21st boy = 42-21 = 21 gaps
1 gap = 3 feet; Therefore 21 gaps = 21 x 3 = 63 feet)
