To The Teacher

PURPOSE:
IDENTIFYING INFERENCES is designed to develop one of the most difficult
interpretive skills-arriving at a probable conclusion from a limited amount of
information. IDENTIFYING INFERENCES requires the readers to read befiyeen the
lines. They must utilize previously acquired knowledge and past experiences in order
to fully comprehend the message of the text.

FOR WHOM:
The skill of IDENTIFYING INFERENCES is developed through a series of books
spanning ten levels (Picture, Preparatory, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H). The Picture Level is
for pupils who have not acquired a basic sight vocabulary. The Preparatory l.evel is for
pupils who have a basic sight vocabulary but are not yet ready for the first-gradeJevel
book. Books A through H are appropriate for pupils who can read on levels one
through eight, respectively. The use of the SpeciJic Skill Series Placement Test is
recommendcd to determine the appropriate level.

THENEWEDITION:
The fifth edition of the Specific Skill Series maintains the qualily and focus that has
distinguished this program for more than 25 years. A key element central to the
program's success has been the unique nature of the reading selections. Nonfiction
pieces about current topics have been designed to stimulate the interest of students,
motivating them to use the comprehension slrategies they have learned to further their
reading. To keep this important aspect of the program intact, a percentage of the
reading selections have been replaced in order to ensure the continued relevance ofthe
subject material.
In addition, a significant percentage ofthe artwork in the program has been replaced to
give the books a contemporary look. The cover photographs are designed to appeal to
readers ofall ages.

SESSIONS:
Short practice sessions are the most effective. It is desirable to have a practice session
every day or every other day, using a few units each session.

SCORING:
Pupils should record their answers on the reproducible worksheets. The worksheets
make scoring easier and provide uniform records of the pupils' work. Using
worksheets also avoids consuming the exercise books.

3
To the Teacher

It is important for pupils to know how well they are doing. For this reason, units
should be scored as soon as they have been completed. Then a discussion can be held
in which pupils justify their choices. (The Integrated Language Activities, many of
which are open-ended, do not lend themselves to an objective score; thus there are no
answer keys for these pages.)

GENERAL INFORMATION ON I DENTIFY ING I N F E RE N C E S :

The difference between a conclusion and an inference, as presented in this series, is
that a conclusion is a logical deduction based upon conclusive evidence, while an
inference is an "educated guess" based upon evidence that is less than conclusive.
Read this sample:

Captain Fujihara quickly parked the fire truck. grabbed his helmet, and
rushed into the house at 6l 5 Oak Street.
You can conclude that Captain Fujihara knows how to drive because that ability was
required to park the fire truck. You can inler that there is a fire at 6 t 5 Oak Street because
Captain Fujihara took his helmet and rushed into that house. This is an inference
because firefighters do rush to put out fires. It is an inference because there may be
another reason for the firefighter's rushing to the house. Captain Fujihara may live there
and be late for supper. Thus an inference is supported by evidence, but the evidence is
not necessarily conclusive.

SUGGESTED STEPS:
l. Pupils read the text. On levels C-H, after reading, pupils examine the statements
that follow the text to determine whether each is a factually true statement (T), a
false statement (F), or a valid inference (I). ("Trire" statements are those about
which the reader can be certain from the text.) On lower levels, pupils determine
which statement about the text or picture is probably true.
2. Then pupils reexamine the text or picture for evidence to support their decisions.
3. Pupils record their answers on lhe worksheets.

RELATED MATERIALS:
Specific Skill Series Placemenl Tests, which enable the reacher ro place pupils at
their appropriate levels in each skill, are available for the Elementary- 1pre- i-6) and
Midway (4 -8) grade levels.

About This Book

In a story, a writer does not tell you everything. You have to

think about what the witer does tell you. Then you can make guesses
about things that are probably true. Think about this story:

The light from the oil lamp glowed dimly. John put
more wood on the fire. Then he went outside to draw water
from the well.

You can guess that this story takes place a long time ago. The
clues the writer gives are the oil lamp, a wood fire, and water from a
well. You know that long ago, people didn't have electricity or
running water.
When you make a guess like this, you are making an inference.
An inference is a guess that is based on facts the writer gives plus
what you yourself have seen and done.

You cannot be certain that your inference is right. The story

above may take place in the present somewhere where there is no
electricity. Other details in the story will help you make the best
possible guess.

In this book, you will read short stories. Then you will read three
sentences about each story. You will have to decide whether each
sentence is true (T), false (F), or an inference (I). A true sentence tells
a factfrom the story. A false sentence tells something that is not true.
An inference says something that is probably true, based on facts in
the story and what you yourself have seen and done. More than one
sentence about each story may be true, false' or an inference. You
must read each sentence carefully to decide which it is.

"l'm not afraid of the cold water," said Chris, "but I'm nor going
to jump into it. The water isn't deep enough."

3. "I hope it rains pretty soon," said the farmer. "If it doesn't, many
of my crops will die."
"You're right," said the farmer's friend, "and I'll have the same
problem, too. I guess all we can do is hope that it rains within a few
days."

4. Ann looked into the refrigerator for something to eat. She took
out some meat and a bottle of milk. Then she got two slices of bread
and made a sandwich. "I should wait for supper," said Ann, ,.but I,m

Ron and his friend Harry were going to be pirates in the class play.
They were going to fight each other with swords. Every day they
practiced the sword fight. Ron was happy because he was supposed to
win the fight. Harry wasn't as happy as Ron.

A. Exercising Your Skill

The story above tells you that Ron is happy but Harry is not. Stories don't
always tell you how the people feel. Sometimes a story gives you clues instead.
You can tell how people feel by finding out how they look or act. How does a
happy person look? What do people do when they are happy? How does an
angry person look? What do people do when they are angry? Read the two
groups of words below. Three of the words in each group tell about the same
feeling. One word is out of place. Decide which words belong. Write each
heading and the words that belong under it.

Happy Angry
laugh cry
chuckle sing
frown scold
smile yell

B. Expanding Your Skill

On your own or with a classmate, think of other words that tell what people
do when they are happy or angry. Add these words to your lists. Then choose
another feeling, such as being sad, tired, or scared. List words that tell about
that feeling.

il

C. Exploring Language
Read the two stories below. On your paper, write the last sentence. Finish it
with words that tell how you think the person in the story was feeling.

I Miya shuffled down the sidewalk, kicking at dry leaves. "I don't
know why Ruthie is angry with me," she said to herself. "She's
always been my best friend. I can't think of anything I've done that
would make her act this way."

D. Expressing Yourself
Choose one of these things.

1. In an old magazine, find a picture of someone who looks happy. Describe

how the person looks-is he or she laughing, smiling, cheering? Make up a
story that tells why the person looks happy. Write the story.

2. Draw a picture that tells about something sad, and write a few sentences
about it. Then write some sentences that tell how the sad story could have a
happy ending.

2. "Look at your dog in the middle of the pond," exclaimed Carl.

"It's going to drown!"
"No, it won't drown," laughed Bill. "My dog loves to swim. It
can swim across the pond and not even be tired. Sometimes I think
my dog is really a fish."

3. "Did you see the movie on TV last night?" asked Pam. "l liked it
when the creature from outer space scared everyone."
"I didn't like it," said Ray. "I think movies about creatures from
outer space are silly. I like movies about things that can really
happen."

4. "It's so quiet here in the country without the traffic and the
crowds!" exclaimed Kim.
"Yes," replied her mother, "and each sight is more beautiful than
the last. I can't imagine why we've never visited here before."

5. An interesting person was coming to Maria's school. It was a

woman who had ridden a bicycle across the whole country. It had
taken her only fourteen days! Most people take sixty to seventy days.
Maria and her friends were eager to hear her speak. They could hardly

"Don't go into the woods," said Ann. "There's a skunk in there."

"How do you know there's a skunk in the woods?" asked Beny.
"My brother went into the woods yesterday," said Ann, "and I knew
there was a skunk in there as soon as he came out!"

A. Exercising Your Skill

In the story above, you can guess that Ann's brother ran into a skunk in the
woods. Imagine that you wanted to tell a story about something that happened
in the woods. How could you let the reader know that it takes place in the
woods without using the word woods? What words would give clues? On your
paper, write the two headings below. Then write two or three words under each
heading.

B. Expanding Your Skill

Talk with your classmates about the lists you wrote. Did some of you write
the same things? Did other people think of some words you hadn't thought ofl
Now write this heading on your paper: Sounds We Might Hear in the

A. Exercising Your Skill

In the story above, Karen and Maria are talking about vacations. What
words come into your mind when you think about taking a trip? Look at the
two groups of words below. Think of a good heading for each group. On your
paper, write your headings.

VACATIONS

ocean suitcase
lake camera
mountains map
city writing paper

What other words might fit under each heading? Write them on your paper.

B. Expanding Your Skill

Choose a word from the lists you made in Part A. What words does this
word make you think of? Write a list under the word. (your list might look
something like the one below.)

Lake
hoats water swimming fish

Tell other students the words on your new list one at a time. See how soon
they can guess which word you have chosen from the lists you made in part A.

C. Exploring Language
Read the stories below. Use clues from each story to decide how you think
the story should end. On your paper, finish the last sentence of each story. It
can be long or short.

l. "Wowl What a sunbum I've got. The sun on the sand and salt

D. Expressing Yourself
Choose one of these things.

1. Rewrite one of the stories above. Your new story should make the vacation
sound very different.

2. Draw a picture for a postcard of a place you'd like to visit' Then write a
message on it to a friend. Tell about some of the things you might do on an
imaginary vacation there.

3. Describe a particular place you would like to visit without naming the
place. Ask your classmates to guess the name of the place you are
describing.
