Math1003 Algebra and Calculus, Fall 2011 Name: Wing Yin KWOK
Homework-1 : Due 09/16/2024 at 11:59pm HKT
This is a set of homework questions to let you get familiar with the basic types of questions that WeBWorK can ask. Here is how to
proceed in general:
1. Download a hard copy of the homework set and log out. Work out the answers before returning to the WeBWorK website to enter
and check your answers.
2. The primary purpose of WeBWorK is to let you know if you are getting the right answers or to alert you if you get the wrong
answers. Use the ”Preview Answers” and ”Submit Answers” to see the answers you entered and check if the answers are correct.
3. Usually you can attempt a problem and submit answers as many times as you want before the due date.
4. Don’t spend a lot of time guessing – it’s not very efficient or effective. If you are having trouble figuring out your error, you should
consult the book, or ask a fellow student, your TA or instructor for help.
5. Give 4 or 5 significant digits for numerical answers. For most problems when entering numerical answers, you can if you wish
enter elementary expressions such as 3∧ 2 or 3**2 instead of 9, sin(3 ∗ pi/2) instead of -1, e∧ (ln(3)) instead of 3, (1 + tan(3)) ∗ (4 −
sin(5))∧ 6 − 15/8 instead of 12748.8657, etc.

.
g(x)

Your answer for the function f (x) is :

Your answer for the function g(x) is :

Problem 2. (2 points)
Simplify the expression

y 2 + 6y
y 2 − 36
and give your answer in the form of

Problem 4. (2 points) Problem 8. (4 points)
Consider the line graphs of the following two linear func- Match each graph with its corresponding equa-
tions, tion.
? 1. −(x + 2)2 + 3
y = f (x) = −8x + 6 y = g(x) = −3x + 1 ? 2. 2(x − 2)2 + 3
? 3. −(x + 3)2 + 2
a) Which line has a greater slope?
? 4. −(x − 3)2 + 2
• A. f(x) has greater slope.
• B. g(x) has greater slope.
• C. Their slopes are equal.

b) Which line has a greater y -intercept?

• A. f(x) has a greater y -intercept.

• B. g(x) has a greater y -intercept. A B C
• C. Their y -intercepts are equal.

Problem 5. (3 points)
You bought a new car for $16,500 in 2005, and the value
of the car depreciates by $550 each year. Find a formula D E F
for V , the value of the car, in terms of t , the number
of years since 2005.
(Click on a graph to enlarge it)
V (t) =
(Be sure NOT TO USE ANY COMMAS when you enter
your formula. For example enter two thousand as 2000
and not as 2,000.)

Problem 6. (2 points)
Solve the equation x2 − 3x − 10 = 0 by factoring.

The solutions are x1 = and x2 = with

x1 ≤ x2 .

Problem 7. (2 points)
By completing the square, the expression x2 − 18x + 190
equals (x + A)2 + B
where A = and B =
