This paper consists of 12 printed pages. Candidates should check the question paper to ensure that all pages are
printed as indicated and no questions are missing.

1. Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow. (2OMKS)
When Google hosted a boot camp in California this month for its Android operating system, there were some
new faces in the room: auto manufacturers. They made the trip to learn about Android Auto, a new dashboard
system meant to let a smartphone power a car’s center screen. Tasks as varied as navigation, communication
and music apps, all constantly talking to the cloud. And to the driver. A similar scene is playing out just a few
miles down the road at Apple, where a rival system, Car Play, has been developed for iPhone users.

After years of being treated as an interesting side business, autos have become the latest obsession for Silicon
Valley, with Apple assigning about 200 engineers to work on electric vehicle technology and Google saying it
envisions the public using driverless cars within five years. But nowhere is that obsession playing out more
immediately than in the battle to develop the next generation of
cars’ dashboard systems.

In the coming weeks and months, dealerships around the country will begin selling vehicles capable of running
Android Auto, Apple Car Play, or both. The systems go far beyond currently available Bluetooth pairing for
playing music or making a hands-free call, and allow for Google’s or Apple’s operating system to essentially take
over the center screen and certain buttons within the car.
“Consumers have spoken,” said John Maddox, assistant director of the University of Michigan’s Mobility
Transformation Center.

“They expect to have coordination between their phone and their vehicle.” Here at Google’s headquarters,
Android Auto is about to make its debut in Americans’ cars after two years in development. Plug in a smartphone
with a USB cord and the system powers up on a car’s screen. The phone’s screen, meanwhile, goes dark, not to
be touched while driving. Apple’s Car Play works similarly, with bubbly icons for phone calls, music, maps,
messaging and other apps appearing on
the car’s center screen. (Apple declined to comment for this article.)

While the idea of constantly connected drivers zipping along roads raises concerns about distracted driving, both
companies say their systems are designed with the opposite goal: to make cellphone- toting drivers safer. “We
looked at what people do with their phones in the car, and it was scary,” said Andrew Brenner, who heads
Google’s Android Auto team. “You want to say to them, ‘Yikes, no, don’t do that.’”
Brenner said his team tried to figure out how to minimize distraction during tasks people frequently do while
driving, while also deciding what should be prevented in the car altogether. Google even built its own driver-
distraction lab, to test different variations.

Android Auto, for example, has no “back” button like the smartphone version. No “recents” button either.
Google Maps has been adjusted to make fonts bigger and streets less detailed, for easier reading while driving.
No action should take more than two seconds — consistent with the
Transportation Department’s voluntary guidelines. “Things that we don’t show are just as important as what we
do show,” Brenner said. Music is most definitely in. Streaming video? Most definitely not.

Most social media will also be blocked, and texts can be sent only with voice commands. Apps on
the screen are optimized for speed: glance, touch and eyes back to the road. “It’s these little glances at the
screen that people do in a car,” he said.

“We want something that’s very glanceable, that can be seen and done quickly.” When the Android Auto project
began, it included a core group of automakers like General Motors, Audi, Honda and Hyundai. Now, as it
prepares for its debut, roughly two dozen car brands have signed on to offer it soon. Apple has teamed up with
roughly the same number of brands, many of which will offer both systems. Most automakers are staying mum
on their exact start dates, but Hyundai is expected to act shortly, and Volkswagen has indicated availability for
its next Golf. GM has said the same about its Spark subcompact. One of the most widespread adopters will be
Ford, which this year will begin offering both Android Auto and Car Play in conjunction with the revamping of the
automaker’s much-criticized Sync system.

By the end of 2016, they will be available on all Fords sold in the United States. “We don’t want people to have
to make a vehicle choice based on which mobile phone they have,” said Don Butler,
Ford’s executive director for connected vehicles and services. “We want to accommodate all customers and
their devices.”

Fiat-Chrysler, considered to have one of the better infotainment platforms on the market, has signed on to
support Google’s and Apple’s systems. But a bit of lament is evident. “We’re confident that
our systems deliver a good experience for our customers,” said Eric Mayne, a spokesman at Chrysler.
“But we’re not standing still either.”

2. Read the excerpt below and then answer the questions that follow. (25 marks)

Krogstad: (Controlling himself) Listen to me, Mrs. Helmer. If necessary, I am prepared to fight for my small
post in the Bank as if I were fighting for my life.

Nora: So it seems.

Krogstad: It is not only for the sake of the money; indeed that weighs least with me in the matter.
There is another reason – well. I may as well tell you. My position is this. I daresay you
know, like everybody else, that once, many years ago, I was guilty of an indiscretion.
Nora: I think I have heard something of kind.

Krogstad: The matter never came into court; but every way seemed to be closed to me after that.
So i took to the business that you know of. I had to do something; and, honestly, I don’t
think I’ve been one of the worst. But now I must cut myself free from all that. My sons are
growing up; for their sake I must try and win back as much respect as I Can in the town. This
post in the Bank was like the first step up for me downstairs again into the mud.
Nora: But you must believe me, Mr.Krogstad; It is not in my power to help you at all.

Krogstad: Then it is because you haven’t the will; but I have means to compel you.

Nora: You don’t mean that you will tell my husband that I owe you money?

Krogstad: Hm! – Suppose I were to tell him?

Nora: It would be perfectly infamous of you. (sobbing) To think of his learning my secret, which
has been my joy and pride, in such ugly, clumsy way – that he should learn it from you! And
it would put me in a horribly disagreeable position –
Krogstad: Only disagreeable?

Nora: (Impetuously) Well, do it, then! – and it will be the worse for you. My husband will see for
himself a blackguard you are, and you certainly won’t keep your
post then.

Krogstad: I asked you if it was only disagreeable scene at home you were afraid of?

Nora: If my husband does get to know of it, of course he will at once pay you what is still owing,
and we shall have nothing more to do with you.

Krogstad: ( coming a step nearer) Listen to me, Mrs. Helmer. Either you have a very bad Memory
or you know very little of business. I shall be obliged to remind you of a few details.

The Crop Thieves

Tswiri tswiri! I the person, I suspect?

What have you heard that makes you suspicious? I

heard things said, rumours of weaver birds; They ate

corn in Lesiba’s field and finished it.

And when they left they sounded hummmmm-

They said, “Listen to the numerous weaver birds, sons of Mosima;s family. Children of the

horse that ate the courtyards and the times,

It is the numerous weaverbirds,

The grey ones that go about in swarms,

Children with the little red beaks,

Children that make a noise in the mimosa trees,

Tupu-tupu! The smoke comes out while the dew still glitters.

Howaaa! Sweaaa! – is heard in the early morning

They are finishing the corn, the numerous weaver birds.

Children with the little red beaks.

At home, it is yo! yo! The

children are crying,

Their mothers have gone to the fields to the birds, It is

the Zulus that have entered the country,

Take axes and loop the tree branches,

Yo! This year we shall eat five,

We shall lack even a blue-tongued goat!

It is numerous weaverbirds, the grey ones that go about in swarms.

Answer all the questions in the spaces provided.

1.COMPREHENSION.
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow after it:

Those who have never travelled by air imagine that it is an interesting experience. It is, in some ways,
but I would like to show some of the disadvantages. When travelling long distances, one disadvantage
is the close proximity of your travelling companions. At least in a crowded train you can get up on the
pretext of going to stretch your legs in the corridor, which gives you an opportunity to see if there is a
vacant seat with less offensive passengers in another compartment, or, if the worst comes to the worst,
you can spend the greater part of the journey in the buffet car eating tired sandwiches and drinking a
brown liquid referred to as coffee out of paper cup. You may not enjoy it but it may well be the lesser of
the two evils.
Not so on the plane. Inevitably, you find yourself wedged in the middle of a row seating many
people. How some unfortunate travellers manage to get the isle or window seats. I have never been
able to discover, since they do not look significantly different from anyone else.
Perhaps it is done by shameless lying: Excuse me, stewardess, but I must get a seat next to the
window as I am recovering from a spinal operation, or I am afraid unless I sit by window, I will get
sick and mess up everybody. All I know is, I have never been able to invent a convincing reason.

So, there I am, wedged next to the fattest man on the plane on one side, and the most fidgety
child on the other. No room to stretch my legs, barely room to fasten my seat belt, nowhere to rest my
arms – in other words, I am sitting „encaged like a sausage, constantly squeezed and trampled over by
other members of my row trying desperately to reach the aisle or get a view from the window. And when
it is time for food, it is even worse. Either the fat man gets my tray as well as his own, or the child,
displaying a well-timed fit of temper, sends my meat nearly flying in all directions.

Time and space will not allow me to tell you about other miseries. But do you know? The
stewardess could address you in a strange tongue and become impatient when you fail to respond. The
food could he strange and unpalatable… and you never quite forget that should something
happen you would meet your maker without any delay whatsoever. Well, man’s conquests of the
air may be his most outstanding achievement to date, but as far as I am concerned, it’s an
international disaster.

find it dull.

Helmer: (smilling)But there was precious little result, Nora.

Nora: Oh, you shouldn’t tease me about that again. How could I help the cat’s
going in and tearing everything to pieces?
Helmer: Of course you couldn’t, poor little girl. You had the best of intentions to
please us all, and that’s the main thing. But it is a good thing that our
hard times are over.

Nora: Yes, it is really wonderful.

Helmer: This time I needn’t sit here and be dull all alone, and you needn’t ruin
your dear eyes and your pretty little hands-
Nora: (clapping her hands) No, Tovald, I needn’t any longer, need I! It’s
wonderfully lovely to hear you say so! (taking his arm) Now I will tell you
how I have been thinking we ought to arrange things, Torvald. As soon
as Christmas is over-(A bell rings in the hall.)
There’s the bell. (She tidies the room a little.) There’s someone at the
door. What a nuisance!
Helmer: If it is a caller, remember I am not at home.

Maid: (in the doorway) A lady to see you, ma’am,--a stranger.

would all die off one by one. They called a meeting where every animal was in attendance and they
determined that they had to do something drastic. It was decided that the mothers would be sacrificed
to ensure the continuation of the animal races. They would eat their mothers.

The dog who had been at the meeting decided to hide his mother. He was not going to sacrifice his
mother, so he hid her in the sky. Every day, he would go to a particular spot where he sang a song
asking his mother to drop a rope.

Dog would sing:

Mother Mother send down your rope All
have killed and eaten their mothers Dog
has taken his mother to the sky Mother
Mother send down your rope

His mother would drop a rope and the dog would climb to the sky where his mother would have a feast
waiting for him.

One day as the dog was singing for his mother to drop the rope, the tortoise was passing by and he hid
himself to observe what was going on. He heard the song dog was singing, then he saw a rope being
dropped from the sky with which the dog climbed to the sky.

The following day, the tortoise went to the same spot and disguising his voice like the dog’s, he
sang the song he had heard the dog sing the day before. A rope dropped from the sky and the
tortoise began to climb this rope. At this same time, the dog was just approaching the same spot and
he saw the tortoise climbing to the sky. The dog immediately started to sing to his mother. This time,
he sang that he was not the one climbing the rope and his mother should cut the rope. Dog’s mother
got a pair of scissors and cut the rope sending the tortoise crashing to the ground. This caused
tortoise shell to break into several pieces. He managed to glue these pieces together but that is how
the tortoise ended up with the rough shell we know today.

1. COMPREHENSION

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow;

There are varied opinions as to why real pressure ought to be. However, this is one view which
approaches this controversial topic from the positive angle and lays down certain tests which true
pleasure must satisfy.

Firstly, no pleasure can be right if its effects on the person who indulges in it are harmful. There are
pleasures which can injure a man’s body and which, in the end, can have a permanent ill- effect on
his health. There are pleasures which can coarsen a man’s moral fibre and lower his resistance
against which is wrong. Any pleasures which leaves a man less physically fit, less mentally alert, less
morally sensitive is wrong.

There are obvious instances of this. Excessive use of alcohol lowers a man’s power of self- control and
renders him liable to do things which he would not have done if he had soberly master of himself. The
taking of drugs and stimulants can end in leaving a man a physical wreck. Over indulgence in eating
and drinking can leave a man burden to himself, with his physical fitness seriously impaired.
Promiscuous sexual relationships can leave a man with the most tragic of disease which will not only
ruin his own life, but will be passed on to his children.

One of the simplest tests of pleasure is: What does it do to a man who indulges in it? If it is actively
harmful, or even if it has a built-in risk in it, it cannot be right.

Secondly, no pleasures can be right if its effect on others is harmful. There are pleasures which can
result in the corruption of other people, either physically or morally. To teach others to do wrong, to
invite them to do, or to make it easier for them to do so, cannot be right. To take drugs should not be
painted as adventurous and free. An illicit relationship, similarly, should not be
presented as a beautiful friendship. Experiment with things that experience has proved to be
disastrous cannot be looked on as the assertion of freedom.

Thirdly, pleasure which becomes an addiction can never be right. One of the old Greeks said that there
were only two questions about any pleasure: ‘Do I posses it or am I possessed by it?’ and ‘Do I control
it or does it control me?’ The minute a man feels that pleasure is gripping him in such a way that he
cannot do without it, he will be well advised to break it before it breaks him.

Addiction can happen with things like tobacco and alcohol; it can also happen with drugs, so that a
man becomes hooked on some drugs and thereby become a slave to them. It is better to have
nothing to do with pleasure which is liable to become an addiction. It is essential, the moment we
become aware of the growing addiction, to stop.

Fourthly, a pleasure is wrong if, to enjoy it, the essentials of life have to take second place. A pleasure
should not cost too much, even if it is a good thing in itself. A man may spend on a game time and
money which should have gone to his home and family. Anything in life that’s gets out of proportion is
wrong. Whenever any pleasure annexes time and money which should have gone to things and to
people in life of even greater importance, then, however fine it is in itself, it is wrong.

N.B “Man” in this passage is used to refer to both man and woman.
Adapted from Ethics in a Permissive Society
By William Barclay, Collins, 121-12.

2. A DOLLS HOUSE by Henrick Ibsen 25 marks.

Read the excerpt below and answer the questions that follow.

Krogstad: I am not asking your husband for a penny.

Nora: What do you want, then?

Krogstad: I will tell you. I want to rehabilitate myself, Mrs. Helmer; I want to get on; and in that
your husband must help me. For the last year and a half, I have not had a hand in anything
dishonorable, amid all that time I have been struggling in most restricted circumstances. I was content
to work my way up step by step. Now I am turned out and I am not going to be satisfied by merely
being taken into favor again. I want to get on, I tell you. I want to get into the bank again, in a higher
position. Your husband must make a place for me-

Nora: That he will never do!

Krogstad: He will; I know him; he dare not protest. And as soon as I am in there with
him, then you will see! Within a year I shall be the manager’s right hand.
It will be Nils Krogstad and not Torvald Helmer who manages the Bank.

Nora: That’s a thing you will never see!

Krogstad: Do you mean that you will-?

Nora: I have courage enough for it now.

Krogstad: Oh, you can’t frighten me. A fine, spoilt lady like you-

Nora: You will see, you will see.

Krogstad: Under the ice, perhaps? Down into the cold, coal-black water?

And then, in the spring, to float up to the surface, all horrible and
unrecognizable with your hair fallen out –

Nora: You can’t frighten me.

Krogstad: Nor you me. People don’t do such things, Mrs. Helmer. Besides, what use
would it be? I should have him completely in my power all the same.

Nora: Afterwards? When I no longer------

Krogstad : Have you forgotten that it is I who have the keeping of your
reputation? (Nora stands speechlessly looking at him.) Well,
now, I have warned you. Do not do anything foolish. When Helmer has
had my letter; I shall expect a message from him. And be sure you
remember that it is your husband himself who has forced me into such
ways as this again. I will never forgive him for that. Goodbye, Mrs.
Helmer. (Exit through the hall)

Nora: (goes to the hall door, opens it slightly and listens) He is going.

He is not putting the letter in the box. Oh no, no! that’s impossible!
(Opens the door by degrees) What is that? He is standing outside.
He is not going downstairs. Is he hesitating? Can he-?
(A letter drops into the box; then KROGSTAD’S footsteps are
heard until they die away as he goes downstairs. NORA utters a
stifled cry, and runs across the room to the table by the sofa. A
short pause)

Nora : In the letter box . (steals across the hall door) There it lies-

Torvald , Torvald, there is no hope for us now! (Mrs Linde comes in

From the room on the left, carrying the dress)
Mrs. Linde There, I can’t see anything more to mend now.

Would you try to try it on-?

Nora : (in a hoarse whisper) Christine, come here.

Mrs. Linde : (throwing the dress down on the sofa) What is the matter with you?

You look so agitated!

Nora: Come here. Do you see that letter? There, look -you can see it
through the glass in the letter box.

The Stupid Monkey.

Once upon a time, a tribe of monkeys made their home in their pleasure garden of the king. On a certain
holiday when the drum was beaten to call the people together, the king gardener, hearing the drum, said
to himself, “Even though it is a holiday, the garden must be watered. Accordingly I will ask the monkeys
to water the garden for me, so that I can be off to enjoy myself and the holiday with the rest.” So he
called the monkeys and asked them to water the garden. When the monkeys had promised to water all
the young trees faithfully, the gardener gave them the water skins and the wooden pot with which to
perform the task.

After the gardener had gone, the monkeys took up the water skins and the watering pot and began to
water the young trees. But the leader of the monkeys stopped them. “Wait”, he said, we must be careful
not to waste water. Before you water them, you must first pull up each tree and look at the size of the
roots. Then you must give plenty of water to those who have long deep roots, but less to those with short
roots. For when this water is finished, we shall have to work to get any more.

“To be sure,” said the other monkey,” that is what we must do.” So they pulled up all the trees just as
their leader had told them to do and all the young trees died.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (KNEC COMPLIANT)

1. Read the passage below and then answer the questions that follow.

Have you ever played truancy? What lies beneath? It is not uncommon to hear tales of students
escaping from school. For those who play truancy, probably, school is not an attractive place. They
choose to stay outside rather than learn at school in the school hours. They still dare do even if they
know that they may bear a dire consequence later. In this article, I will examine the reasons for
students playing truancy. I will also discuss that students who play truancy are foolish and
irresponsible.

First of all, low academic performers find learning in school boring. Students who get poor results in an
exam are either lazy or not interested in studying. They like going shopping, playing games in game
stations or wandering along the streets. They don’t spend time on revising what they have learned in
lessons. They may not understand the concepts or theories thoroughly. Later, they may even forget
the topics that teachers have taught in school. They soon will lose interest in learning as they don’t
understand the concepts in lessons. They may find it boring to sit in the classroom. Thus, they want to
run out of school to do the things they like, say watching films.

Apart from escaping from boring lessons, some students play truancy so as to challenge the school
authority. Nowadays, youngsters usually are rebellious. In order to achieve the sense of excitement,
they will try to break the school rules. They know it clearly that if their misbehavior is discovered by
teachers or staff in school, they will receive severe punishment. They don’t mind the dire
consequence. Their rebellious bones drive them to follow their heart and do whatever they like. Playing
truancy fulfils the curiosity of students. They like to know if the school really gets a very good security.
Playing truancy is just like playing a video game. The students, themselves, are the main characters.
All the people in school, including schoolmates, teachers, principal and janitors are enemies. They will
be caught if their “mission” is discovered. They have to observe the surroundings carefully before
going out from the main entrance. It is not an easy task! The feeling of playing truancy is amazing and
fantastic. Students enjoy the feeling of breaking school rules. They feel excited as they “successfully”
challenge the school rules without being discovered.

Undoubtedly, playing truancy is a foolish act. Students, in fact, are undergoing the process of self-
destruction. As we all know, students will be given a demerit if they are found playing truancy. The
demerit will be clearly stated in the exam report sheet. It is similar to a criminal record which is also
carved on us for a whole life. We usually have to bring the exam report sheet along with us when
we apply for a job. The demerit, to a large extent, reflects the low moral standard. Try to think about it,
if you were the employers, would you hire this kind of person? Even if they hire you, they won’t trust
you. Very often, when we have once done something wrongly, people will think that we can hardly
rectify our mistakes. The consequence of playing truancy is dire!

Playing truancy not only harmful to our own self, but also the staff in school. Try to imagine, although
we can successfully escape from school, we may have accidents in the streets. Recently, a student
who played truancy was injured in a traffic accident. The boy was crushed by a truck. The parents of
the boy complained about the school. A lot of people have to shoulder the responsibility if the students
are hurt. Janitors will bear the brunt of the injury. They are responsible for preventing students
from going out from the main entrance. Students may escape from school when the janitors go to
toilets. The janitors may be sacked as students are hurt when they are on duty. Their living of their
family will be difficult as they are usually the breadwinners. They are victims of the incident.
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (KNEC COMPLIANT)
Besides harming the janitors, the principal of the school has to be blamed too. As the head of a
school, he/she has to bear the responsibility for the mistakes made by the staff of the school. The
parents will lodge a complaint to him/her. If the students are seriously injured in accidents, he/she, in
all likelihood, will be the target of the mass media. A great disturbance will be brought to him/her.
He/she will live under pressure. It is unfair to him/her.

In addition, the reputation of the school will be tarnished. The news of students who play truancy or
are involved in accidents will be widely publicized by the mass media. The public will think that the
students from that school are naughty. Moreover, they will think that the school does have security
problems. It will lead to a walk away by some good students as their parents are unwilling to send
them to that school. Both the school and students will suffer from the selfish acts of students.

All in all, playing truancy should never be tried out. Under any circumstances, we should be
considerate and must think of the aftermath of doing particular things. We should follow the rules. If
everyone breaks the rules, our society will be in a mess. Thus, it is crucial for us to think twice before
rebelling

PAPER TWO
TIME:2 ½ HRS
THE RIFT VALLEY & NORTH EASTERN REGIONS KCSE JOINT NATIONAL
MOCK 2023

1. Read the following

passage and answer the questions that follow. (20mks)
The world has a weight problem. Within the past decade, obesity rates have shot up by 50 percent,
rising from 200 million people in 1995 to 300 million in 2003.Even places more familiar with famine
than fat are starting to worry about their waistlines. Africa now has weight loss clinics. In a recent
survey in India-home to half the worlds undernourished population-55 percent of women between 20
and 69 were found to be found to be overweight .Twenty percent of Chinese adults are overweight.
Brazil’s childhood-obesity rate has jumped to 239 percent in a generation- four times the growth rate
for youth in the United States. In March 2003,the International Obesity task force revealed that 1.7
billion of the planets 6 billion people were overweight or obese. How did we all get so fat? The problem
stems from the collision of a number of modern trends; rising affluence and urbanization; the
proliferation of conveniences like cars, computers, fast food and television; and the 21st century work
culture, with its desk jobs and long hours. In rich countries, the familiar mantra of low-fat diet and
exercise is routinely ignored. In the developing world, where health education is frequently non-
existent, people are particularly vulnerable to the glamour of American burgers and the comforts of
the couch. Rural migrants to cities are suddenly confronted with market-stall snacks and
McDonald’s. In newly industrialized countries packaged foods and fast food chains are promoted as an
index of affluence.

The consumption of foods high in fat, sugar and salt-combined with increasingly sedentary lifestyles-
is worrying health experts. And it is killing us. Diet-linked diseases-chiefly heart disease, cancer,
diabetes and hypertension, now account for more than half of all deaths in Arab countries. In
Barbados, more than 60 percent of hospital and drug-service budgets go toward coping with obesity-
related illnesses. In Chinese hospitals, the number of patients suffering from weight-related diseases
has increased by 30 percent. The problem is so persuasive that the World health Organization has
declared obesity a global epidemic.

In many places ,obesity and related illnesses such as diabetes are growing fastest among children and
teenagers. These may be because those groups are more vulnerable to the excesses of their new
found liberation. teenagers from rich homes have cars and can go to restaurants with their friends,
and consume high-fat fast food. Nutritionists also blame food marketing and the proliferation of
supermarkets for the rise in childhood obesity. Ultimately, diabetes is incurable. Although changes in
lifestyles and diet can help stem the progression of the disease, it never disappears. Most patients are
on insulin a decade after diagnosis. The best long-term hope for reversing the trend is for society to
get its weight problems under control.

QUESTION TWO: SEEN TEXT COMPREHENSION(25MARKS)

Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow.

Helmer: Yes, but you must. Tell me something reasonable that you would particularly like to have.

Nora: No, I really can’t think of anything-unless, Torvald-

Helmer :Well?

Nora: (playing with his coat buttons, and without raising her eyes to his)If you really want to give
something, you might-you might-
Helmer: Well, out with it!

Nora: (speaking quickly)You might give me money, Torvald. Only just as much as you can
afford; and then one of these days I will buy something with it.

Helmer :But, Nora-

Nora: Oh, do! dear Torvald ; please ,please do! Then I will wrap it up in beautiful gilt paper and hang
it on the Christmas tree. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Helmer :What are little people called that are always wasting money.
Nora :Spendthrifts- I know. Let us do as you suggest, Torvald, and then I shall have time to think
what I am most in want of. That is a very sensible plan, isn’t it?

Helmer: (smiling)Indeed it is-that is to say, if you were really to save out of the money I give you,
and then really buy something for yourself. But if you spend it all on the housekeeping and then
really buy something for yourself. But if you spend it all on the housekeeping and any number of
unnecessary things, then I merely have to pay up again.

Nora :Oh but, Torvald-

Helmer: You cant deny it, my dear little Nora.(puts his arm round her waist).its a sweet little spendthrift, but
she uses up a deal of money. One would hardly believe how expensive such little persons are!
Nora: it’s a shame to say that. I do really save all I can.

Helmer: (laughing) that’s very true,- all you can. But you can’t save anything!
Nora:(smiling quietly and happily)You haven’t any idea how many expenses we skylarks and
squirrels have, Torvald.

Helmer: You are an odd little soul. Very like your father. You always find some new way of wheedling
money out of me, and, as soon as you have got it, it seems to melt in your hands. You never know
where it has gone. Still, one must take you as you are. It is in the blood; for indeed it is true that you
inherit these things, Nora.

Nora: Ah, I wish I had inherited many of papa’s qualities.

Helmer: And I would not wish you to be anything but just what you are, my sweet little skylark. but,
do you know, it strikes me that you are looking rather-what shall I say-rather uneasy today.

Nora: Do I?
Helmer: You do, really. Look straight at me.

Nora: (looks at him)well?

3.Read the following narrative and answer the questions that follow.(20 marks)
A man had two daughters from two different wives. One of his daughters was motherless, her
mother died when she was still a baby. The mother of the other daughter did not like the
motherless girl. She did not like her because her daughter loved the step sister more than she
loved her. The woman therefore thought out some ways of eliminating her.
One day the woman made an arrangement with a hyena. The hyena was to go and wait for the two
girls somewhere in the bush. To the motherless girl she would tie a band like a bangle on the left arm
and to her daughter she would tie one on the right arm. After the hyena had gone to wit, she called
the two girls, tied the bands accordingly and sent both of them to go and visit one of their aunts. She
directed them to follow the path where she asked the hyena to wait for them. On the way the woman’s
daughter suggested that they should exchange the bangles.

‘‘Why should my mother tie your bangle on the left arm, when everybody else wears theirs on the
right arm?’’ he complained and took her bangle and put it on her step sisters right arm and took the
one she was wearing and put it on her left arm. They went on with their journey. They had gone half-
way through the journey when the hyena came and caught the woman’s own daughter and ate her
up. The motherless child was terrified and grew hysterical. She cried endlessly. Her grief was so
great that she refused to go away from the scene of her sisters tragic death. She wished to die too;
to be eaten up by the hyena which had eaten her dear friend and sister. She cried, wailed, wept and
grieved for her dear sister, so much that if sorrow expresses by the living would bring back the dead,
Awino’s sister Nyawino would have returned to life. After the kill, the hyena had gone away but
Awino would not leave, She stayed on the spot wailing.

“Aai, what are you doing here alone in the bush?”Some travelers asked her.”We were two, and we
were going to visit our aunt but my sister has been eaten up by a hyena ,”she cried. The travelers
saw her futile determination. They could not leave her there and in any case they were convinced
that the parents should know. “No, you go home and take the news of the death of your sister
home.” The people advised her more persuasively until she accepted to go home.
She arrived home, tired and wet with tears and sweat. She explained to her father what had happened.
He became furious and called his wife to explain. but she was so full of grief that she could not talk.
The elders were then called. It was agreed unanimously that the woman must be banished from the
village because of her jealousy and wickedness. She left the village with regret and shame.
