One Nation
One Nation
The concept of One Nation, One Election proposes holding elections for the Lok
Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously in India. This idea aims to reduce
costs, save time, and ensure continuous development without frequent election
interruptions.
Currently, India faces multiple elections every year, which disrupt governance
and lead to heavy expenses. For example, the 2019 Lok Sabha elections cost
₹60,000 crores. Holding all elections together could significantly cut these costs.
This system was practiced in India until 1967, but it stopped due to early
dissolutions of assemblies. Reviving it would need constitutional amendments
and consensus among political parties.
Supporters argue it can enhance administrative efficiency and voter
participation. Critics worry about logistical challenges and centralizing power.
Implementing One Nation, One Election requires careful planning and
cooperation, but it could strengthen India's democracy and governance in the
long run.
