VOLTAGE REGULATOR USING

IC 7805 AND IC 7905

AIM
To study the characteristics of voltage regulator using IC 7805 and IC 7905.

APPARATUS REQUIRED
● LM7805
● LM7905
● Breadboard
● Resistors
● Multimeter
● Connecting wires

THEORY
Voltage regulator is a circuit that creates and maintains a fixed output voltage,
irrespective of changes to the input voltage or load conditions. The integrated
circuits which are used for the regulation of voltage are termed as voltage
regulator ICs. The voltage regulator IC7805 and IC7905 are a member of 78XX
and 79XX series of voltage regulator IC respectively. It is a fixed linear voltage
regulator. The 78XX voltage regulator ICs produce positive fixed DC voltages,
whereas 79XX voltage regulator ICs produce negative fixed DC voltage values.
XX represents the value of the fixed output voltage that the particular IC provides
for.
IC 7805 is a +5 Volt DC regulated supply. It has 3 pins:
● Pin 1 : Input (7V to 35V) - In this pin of IC, positive unregulated voltage
is given.
● Pin 2 : Ground - In this pin the ground is given.
● Pin 3 : Output (5V) - The regulated output of 5V.
IC 7905 is designed to provide a fixed output voltage of -5 Volts DC.
● Pin 1 : Ground - This pin is connected to ground.
● Pin 2 : Input (-7V to -25V) - The unregulated input voltage.
● Pin 3 : Output (-5V) - The regulated output of -5V.

PROCEDURE
Connect the circuit diagram as shown in the figure. Switch on the power supply.
Analyse voltage regulating property of IC7805. Then connect the next circuit to
analyse the voltage regulating property of IC 7905. Output voltages for various
inputs are taken using multimeter. A graph is drawn with input voltage on X axis
and output voltage on Y axis.
RESULT
The characteristics of voltage regulator using IC 7805 and IC 7905 is studied.
