EXTREME TEAMS
‘Why Pixar, Netflix, Airbnb, and Other Cutting-Edge Companies Succeed Where Most Fail’
Extreme teams/organizations are those that dared to see things differently and do them differently to
be the best and become better daily. To successfully lead an ‘extreme’ organization, there is a need to
build the organization around teams and not individuals or technology. People are the greatest assets of
any organization because they are the drivers of the processes, technology, and every other element of
the organization. Building organizations around teams foster a sense of belonging and ownership of
roles. Every team member must clearly understand the objective of the organization and have a shared
obsession with it.
The composition of a team is very important; certain elements are important in team formation such as:
Team Persona - Balancing the desire for excellent Talents without compromising organizational
fit
Shared obsession – a strong belief in the long-term objective of the company
Team diversity – having people with different backgrounds and personalities in the team to
improve ideation and problem-solving
Alignment of individuals to the culture – ‘culture fit
Culture is another key element of ‘extreme’ teams as identified by Robert Shaw from the analysis of the
companies surveyed. Culture are specific practices that define an organization internally and they
determine if the organization will be average, just successful, or outstanding. Commitment and
internalization of these practices are critical for ‘extreme’ organizations.
Therefore cultural practices are not just desires but carefully developed and analyzed practices that are
designed and infused into the DNA of an organization and its people. These practices guide daily
activities in the organization and give a sense of purpose to the team beyond just having a job. Leaders
are tasked with the job of culture design and formation which is even more important than the product
and services of the organization. As the saying goes ‘ culture will eat up strategy’, culture is the life of
the organization. It is therefore important to build the right culture at the formative stage of the
organization. There is never a ‘culture void’, the absence of a defined culture is a culture in itself – which
means things can be done in any way a team member deems fit.
In conclusion, there is no quick way to build a highly successful team, each leader must carefully
determine the most appropriate approach putting into consideration factors like; industry, product,
long-term objectives, and business model. Building a highly successful team requires objectivity,
patience, resilience, and adaptability.
