Reflection on Coffee by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson

In the story Coffee by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, the narrator is getting ready to meet
a friend in person for the first time. They’ve only known each other through text, which
makes this a big moment for her. This brings up a lot of anxiety, and she feels unsure about
whether she can trust the friend in real life the same way she does over text. To help herself
cope, she uses humor and thinks about the times her friend has said, “I got you.” This little
phrase means a lot to her because it makes her feel safe and supported, and it reminds her
that she can rely on someone.

The story’s focus on trust and self-doubt connects to my own experience. I’ve also struggled
with the challenge of trusting others, especially when it comes to things that matter a lot to
me. For example, I’ve had experiences where I asked people to do something important, but
they forgot, which made me nervous about depending on them in the future. This has made
me feel like I need to remind people of what I need, sometimes over and over, just to be
sure. The narrator’s need to hear her friend’s support through words like “I got you” reminds
me of my own need for encouragement from friends and family. I know I can rely on them,
and this helps me pursue my goals and believe in what I want to do.

One quote from the story that connects with my experience is “I got you.” Even though it’s
simple, it shows how much her friend cares and supports her. For me, hearing similar words
from my family and friends has always meant a lot. Whenever I’m facing something new or
tough, their support reminds me that I’m not alone and that they’re there to help me. When
my friends or family say, “I got you,” it’s reassuring, and it encourages me to keep going. I
feel safe, knowing they’re in my corner, which is exactly how the narrator feels when her
friend says the same thing.

One way this story connects to my life is through my experience of sharing my career
dreams with others. I have a big goal of owning a Dodge Demon SRT Hellcat one day and
maybe even starting a business with friends. I know these are not typical dreams, and
sometimes I feel unsure about sharing them because they might seem far-fetched or
unrealistic to others. But, like the narrator, I often rely on the people close to me to help me
stay focused. When I think about these dreams, the support I get from family and friends
reminds me that I can go after what I want. This feeling of encouragement and security helps
me stay focused on what matters to me.

This turning point has helped me open up more about my goals and challenges. Realizing
that showing my fears and doubts doesn’t make me weak, but actually helps me connect
with others, has made me feel more comfortable asking for help. Knowing that the people
close to me “have my back” has given me the confidence to keep pursuing my dreams,
knowing I’m not alone. In the past, I might have felt that asking for help made me look weak,
but now I see it as something that actually brings people closer.

The similarities between my experience and the narrator’s are clear. Like her, I feel anxious
about opening up and sharing my personal goals because I worry about what others might
think or if they will actually support me. Both of us rely on the encouragement of others to
feel confident. The main difference is that my anxieties are more related to achieving specific
dreams, while the narrator’s are about trusting her friend and the nervousness of meeting in
person. Still, both of our stories show how important it is to have someone who’s willing to
say, “I got you.”

Reflecting on *Coffee* has shown me that being open can lead to meaningful connections.
For example, I remember wanting a rare Hot Wheels car. While looking, I saw someone else
also searching for Hot Wheels. I was shy at first, especially because I knew the car was rare,
but I decided to ask him anyway. He ended up finding the car and gave it to me. That
moment taught me that reaching out for help can have good outcomes, just like in *Coffee*.
Now I realize how valuable it is to let others support me, and this story reminds me that
asking for help can be a positive thing.

In conclusion, Coffee has helped me see that self-doubt is a natural feeling and that having
support from others can help make challenges feel less overwhelming. Trusting others can
actually make it easier to reach my goals. Both the narrator and I have learned that being
open and sharing our true feelings can make connections stronger and help us face
challenges with more confidence.
