Examination No.2
Problem 1:
Design a 355mm wide rectangular short tied column, (See Figure 1), with bars only in two
end faces for Pu = 2224 kN, Mu = 339 kN m, f ‘c = 27.8 MPa (4ksi) and fy = 413.7 MPa
(60ksi), and effective cover of 25mm. Select a column with approximately 2% steel. Use
interaction diagram.
Problem 2:
Check the adequacy of the column shown in Figure 2 by means of
(a) load contour method and by;
(b) reciprocal method.
The column is subjected to biaxial bending with Pn = 1000 kN, ex = 200 mm and ey = 200
mm. (f ‘c = 27.6 MPa, fy = 413.7 MPa, Es = 200,000 MPa, and Ao = 615.75 mm 2).
Effective cover is 75 mm on all sides. Use interaction diagram.

Problem 3:
A concrete column has a cross-section as shown in Figure 3, is reinforced symmetrically
by bars (area of one bar is Ao = 615.75mm2) placed in two opposite faces of the section.
The bars have their centroids at 75 mm from the near edges of the section. The concrete
has a cylinder strength f ‘c of 28 MPa, while the steel has a yield strength fy of 414 MPa.
If the eccentric load lies along the X-axis,
a. Locate the plastic centroid of the section.
b. What are the values of the balancing vertical load, balancing moment and
balancing eccentricity?
c. What is the value of ultimate bending moment, Mu, when pure flexure arises
(Pu = 0)?.
d. What is the value of maximum axial load when pure axial arises (e = 0).
e. Draw the interaction diagram of the column for the said eccentricity.
