Nursery
A nursery is a place where different kinds of plants are raised and grown.
Nursery workers are responsible to take good care of each plant. Whose duties as
well are to maintain the quality of these plants from initial planting to harvest.
In the nursery, the young seedlings are tended from sowing to develop in such a way
as to be able to endure the hard field conditions.

Factors to Consider in nursery site selection

• The area should be flat
• The area should have a good drainage
• The area should have access to a water source
• The area should be accessible to transportation
• A nursery should be near to plantation or production site

5
Two types of nurseries

Temporary nurseries are established in or near the planting site. There are
sometimes called “flying nurseries”.

https://bit.ly/3mtcUWV

Permanent nurseries
These types of nurseries can be large or small depending on the objective and the
number of seedlings raised annually.
In all cases, permanent nurseries must be well-designed, properly sited, and with an
adequate water supply.

6
There are many different types of nurseries that specialize in specific plants,
including edible crops or ornamentals. For example, some nurseries specialize in
greenhouse propagation or the cultivation of perennial plants. This may be through
seeding, taking cuttings, or using leaf propagation.
Other nurseries concentrate on the cultivation of woody plants like trees and shrubs.
Some species are grown from seeds, stem cuttings, or grafting in the controlled
setting of a greenhouse.
A nursery operator may cultivate and grow species to a certain stage and then sell
the plants in large quantities, as in a wholesale nursery, or they may grow them to
later sell to the public directly, as in a retail nursery.

Let Us Remember

➢ In nursery operations, farm tools, implements, and equipment play a critical

role. Their availability makes the process go much more smoothly and quickly.
However, even if one has the most advanced tools and implements, they are
useless if one does not know how to utilize them.

➢ Before employing any tools, implements, or equipment in a nursery, it is

necessary to have a thorough understanding of how they work. Handling these
Farm tools, implements, and equipment safely is critical; otherwise, they can
have harmful side effects and cause future accidents.

➢ Specialized tools are necessary for the establishment of a nursery.

Familiarizing yourself with the various nursery tools, agricultural implements,
and simple equipment, as well as their applications, can assist you in
ensuring that things run smoothly and efficiently in the nursery.
