GHD_Generating sector model in Petrel

Note. With the upgrades of Petrel Platform, options/buttons to generate sector

are different from previous version. This document was designed to show how to

generate sector model in Petrel.

Building a sector model in Petrel is a meaningful task as it can be used to study

infilling wells, designing complex wells, or matching a particular well. To create a

sector model, the boundary conditions (flow or pressure) should be provided by the

results of the large model.

If you are using ECLIPSE to set up the flow boundary model, you need to run

the global model firstly to generate the FLUX file, and then call the FLUX file in the

sector model. There are several steps that require manual editing of keywords, but

in Petrel RE, you can bypass the keyword editing part completely and generate the

sector model quickly and efficiently.

(1) Selecting the range of the sector model using the polygon
editing tool in the 2D window

SLB-Private
(2) Generating region property through Geometrical modeling
Under the Reservoir Engineering tab, in the Geometrical Modeling section,

choose the method "Assign between surfaces and polygons." Select "Region" as

the property template. For the boundary polygon, choose the polygon previously

created (you can name it "flux_boundary").

Note that inside the boundary, assign any values (solely for establishing the

regional property), while outside the boundary, no values should be defined.

(3) Obtain Flux boundary.
Define the simulation case --> Advanced --> Sector modeling --> Select

"Capture boundary condition" --> Import the local region generated in process 2 -

-> Choose the desired boundary type (either flow boundary or pressure boundary,

in this case, select flow boundary) --> Run to generate flow boundary data in the

model panel (Dumpflux_ECLIPSE 100).

SLB-Private
In addition, you can also create flow boundary conditions on the model after

the computation is completed. Right-click on the desired case to create the flow

boundary --> select "Settings" --> under the "Operations" tab, import the generated

Region area --> click "Create." You will be able to see it in the Models panel.

(4) Generate sector model case (reduced run)
In the Cases panel, select SNARK_HM_RESV, then in the Simulation tab,

choose "Insert sector model case." A new local model,

SNARK_HM_RESV_SECTOR_MODEL, will be generated in the Cases panel.

(5) Run sector model case.

Define the simulation case --> Select the local model case (SECTOR MODEL)

--> Advanced --> Sector modeling --> Import the boundary conditions

(Dumpflux_ECLIPSE 100) under "Boundary condition" --> Choose region to use

SLB-Private
the boundary condition (in the example, only one region, Region1) > Run sector

model.
