Geologic Mapping

Science Olympiad 2024-25

14 October 2024

Welcome to practice!
Community Binder
The community binder should have been shared with you guys and you
should have access to it.

It is named “Geologic Mapping Community Binder 2024-25”.

I have already added some content to it from my binder last year, but
feel free to add more well-researched information to it. We will all depend
on it!

Please act in good faith when contributing to the binder.

Agenda
Today, we’re going to learn more about reading topographic maps, and
how this skill can be applied to actual competitions.

We will learn about the various components of a topographic map and

complete practice questions.
Map Symbols Key
You can find they key for USGS topographic maps here:

Practice Map for Today
For today’s practice, we’re going
to use the Temecula-Fallbrook
quadrangle. You can access the
full map here:

Contour Lines
The contour lines of a topographic map indicates changes in elevation.

The changes in elevation between two contour lines will always be equal,
and the exact change will be indicated by the map key.
Contour Lines
Since contour lines indicate the exact same change in elevation, they are
useful in determining the steepness of a hill, mountain, slope, etc.

The terrain on the left

is STEEPER than the
right due to the
contour lines being
closer together
Contour Lines
They can also be good indicators on where river valleys are located.
Rivers flow from higher to lower elevations.
Contour Lines
During competitions, you may be asked to draw a side profile of a line
drawn across the map. Just follow the contour lines and pay close
attention to the distance between the lines as well as the actual elevation.

_________
Section Numbers
These numbers indicate the sections of the map to easily indicate a
specific area of the map. For example, you may be asked to find a feature
in a specific section of the map during competitions.

Map Coordinates
The corners of the map will indicate the coordinates of each corner.
Quadrangle Name
The top right corner of the map will indicate the name/region of the map.
