QUESTION 1
A simply supported beam 2 m long has a rectangular cross-section 40 mm wide and 120 mm deep. It
carries a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m over the whole span and in addition to this an axially
applied compressive force of 3 kN.

Determine:
1.1 The maximum direct and bending stress on the beam; [18 Marks]
1.2 Plot stress distribution diagram and; [4 Marks]
1.3 The position of the neutral axis. [3 Marks]

QUESTIONI2
A simply supported I-beam has a span of length L and is subjected to a load P at midspan. The flanges
are bf wide and hf thick, while the web is bw wide and hw thick. The overall depth of the beam cross-
section is H. Using the geometric properties provided in the figure below:

Determine:
2.1 The expression of shear stress at sections A, B, C, and the neutral axis (NA); [14 Marks]
2.2 Plot the standard shear stress distribution diagram at any section. [4 Marks]

QUESTION 3
What is the relationship between bending stress and shear stress at the neutral axis? [4 Marks]
