Tutorial 4 – Information Systems, Organizations, and Strategy

1. Why are smartphones considered as disruptive technology? Discuss and provide


examples of first mover and fast follower in the smartphone industry.

2. Based on Porter’s model, discuss the FIVE competitive forces in the industry’s
environment that determine the strategic position of a business firm.

3. Describe the FOUR strategies enabled by information systems that business firms
can adopt for dealing with competitors, new market entrants, suppliers, customers and
substitute products.

4. Low-cost leadership, product differentiation, focus on market niche and strengthen


customer and supplier intimacy are four competitive strategies enabled by
information systems. Explain TWO real-life examples for any TWO strategies that
firms pursue.
