Q1. I don't know where to start.

Here are some resources to help you get started:

Q2. I can’t get access to Remote Desktop

Firstly, make sure you have the VPN installed connected. Go to VPN Installation and Config for help on
installing and configuring the connection.

Secondly, make sure you are trying to connect to computers you have access to. Most people only have
access to the Cambridge Open Access computers. Click that name on the left and it will jump to the
computers available in that category.

Q3. When I try to download, it doesn't work.
If you try to download and it doesn't fully complete, look at the bottom window for errors. There is a
window that appears when you verify your program (which happens automatically when you try to
download) and errors are present.

Sometimes this window can look blank, but errors still could be present. Scroll up in this window if
necessary to look at the last line in the box. Check to see how many errors are present (Warnings will
not prevent you from downloading).

To find out more information on the error, you can double click on it and the software will take you right
to the error. Fix all the errors and then try to download again.

A few common errors:

• Empty Rung: if there isn't an output instruction on a rung, it will cause an error. It will also add
an empty rung if you open an empty routine. Just delete this rung to clear the error
• Not Saving the Lab Simulate PLC file: If you open the lab simulate template file directly from
eConestoga, it stores it in temporary memory. Make sure you save the file to your G drive or to
a USB stick and then try to download again
• Missing tags: all instructions need to have a tag linked. If you have a question mark above an
instruction, it will cause an error.
• Undefined tag: all instructions need to have a valid tag linked. If you have a spelling mistake in a
tag name, it will cause an error. *tags are not case-sensitive, but a zero is easily mistaken for an
"o" and "L"/"I"/1 can all look similar too.

Q4. My logic is not causing lights to turn on or cylinders to move.

There could be a few reasons why this is happening, consider these...

• Is your PLC software ONLINE and in RUN mode?

• Have you pressed the "POWER ON" button?
• Are you working in the MAINROUTINE? The main routine is the only routine that gets executed
by the processor.
• Is your rung enabled? Does it have a Vertical Green bar on the left, or does it have i's or e's

Q5. I keep seeing errors on the Visual Interface.

There could be a few reasons why this is happening, consider these:

1. Are you ONLINE and in RUN mode with the PLC software (Studio 5000)?

2. Remember there are two different template files, one for the Lab and one for the Simulator.
Make sure you are using a Lab Simulator template as opposed to a Lab Template (Look at the
top line of the Controller Organizer, it should say "Simulator"). Lab Tip #8 helps you transfer
logic from one template to another.
3. Have you selected the right station on the Visual Interface? Look at the screen title, does it
match your station? If not, go to back to the main menu and select your station.
4. Are you running the simulator on your personal computer (not a Conestoga computer or remote
desktop)? You may need to do Lab Tip #12.
5. If none of the above apply, reboot the computer and start over making sure you are following
the instructions properly.
If you are using remote desktop,
i) Write down the name of the computer you are on. It will be near the top of your screen in
blue, for example A2111-A05.

ii) In the bottom left corner of the remote desktop window, click the windows icon, then
power, then Restart.

iii) The window will automatically close. Wait a few minutes.

iv) Open your downloads folder and look for the computer name. Double click on it to initiate
the remote desktop connection again. If it says it can’t connect, wait another minute and
try again.

v) Log onto the computer as before and start up the lab simulator again.

6. If that doesn't work, switch computers and start over making sure you are following the
instructions properly.

Q6. I just keep getting errors and can't get the Lab Simulator going.

If you are getting errors where the video doesn't show them, try these steps:

1. Close all of the software applications and start over making sure you are following the
instructions properly
2. If that doesn't work, reboot the computer and start over making sure you are following the
instructions properly.

3. If that doesn't work, switch computers and start over making sure you are following the
instructions properly.

Q7. I get asked to enter a password when I open the PLC software.
There is a step that IT needs to do on the computers that they sometimes forget to do. Close all Lab
Simulator software and complete the following steps:
FactoryTalk Directory Reset instructions
1. Open FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard
2. On the first window, make sure both boxes have a checkmark and click next.
3. Enter your username and password (the one you use to log onto the computer), click next and
then wait a minute for it to refresh.
4. Enter your username and password again, click next and then wait for it to refresh (it will go
quicker this time).
5. Click Finish

Q8. I can’t see the buttons at the top of the screen, they are all distorted.

When you are using a laptop to run remote desktop, very often the scaling is a problem. This causes the menu
buttons at the top of the window to be compressed and unavailable.

To fix this, right click on the desktop of your computer and select display settings. Locate the "Scale & layout"
section and change the Scale to 100%. Now when you use the software on remote desktop, your menu buttons
won't be cut off. Note that you may need to do a restart for this to take affect on the software applications.

Q9. I get an error message asking for newer FactoryTalk Directory

information.

If you get an error as shown above on your personal PC when trying to restore a visual interface application, you
can download and install the latest version of FactoryTalk Directory from the “other” folder on the resource site.

Q10. I get an error message saying there’s another user when starting Logix
Emulate.
If you get an error message similar to the one below, there could be two reasons.

#1 – You have clicked on the Logix Emulate application twice without giving the software time to open.
In this case, just click OK and wait a bit for the software to open.

#2 – Someone else has been on the computer and didn’t log off properly. In this case, you should
restart the remote computer and try again.
