Lab Simulator Frequently Asked Questions
Firstly, make sure you have the VPN installed connected. Go to VPN Installation and Config for help on
installing and configuring the connection.
Secondly, make sure you are trying to connect to computers you have access to. Most people only have
access to the Cambridge Open Access computers. Click that name on the left and it will jump to the
computers available in that category.
Sometimes this window can look blank, but errors still could be present. Scroll up in this window if
necessary to look at the last line in the box. Check to see how many errors are present (Warnings will
not prevent you from downloading).
To find out more information on the error, you can double click on it and the software will take you right
to the error. Fix all the errors and then try to download again.
• Empty Rung: if there isn't an output instruction on a rung, it will cause an error. It will also add
an empty rung if you open an empty routine. Just delete this rung to clear the error
• Not Saving the Lab Simulate PLC file: If you open the lab simulate template file directly from
eConestoga, it stores it in temporary memory. Make sure you save the file to your G drive or to
a USB stick and then try to download again
• Missing tags: all instructions need to have a tag linked. If you have a question mark above an
instruction, it will cause an error.
• Undefined tag: all instructions need to have a valid tag linked. If you have a spelling mistake in a
tag name, it will cause an error. *tags are not case-sensitive, but a zero is easily mistaken for an
"o" and "L"/"I"/1 can all look similar too.

There is a step that IT needs to do on the computers that they sometimes forget to do. Close all Lab
Simulator software and complete the following steps:
FactoryTalk Directory Reset instructions
1. Open FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard
2. On the first window, make sure both boxes have a checkmark and click next.
3. Enter your username and password (the one you use to log onto the computer), click next and

quicker this time).

When you are using a laptop to run remote desktop, very often the scaling is a problem. This causes the menu
buttons at the top of the window to be compressed and unavailable.
To fix this, right click on the desktop of your computer and select display settings. Locate the "Scale & layout"
section and change the Scale to 100%. Now when you use the software on remote desktop, your menu buttons
won't be cut off. Note that you may need to do a restart for this to take affect on the software applications.
If you get an error as shown above on your personal PC when trying to restore a visual interface application, you
can download and install the latest version of FactoryTalk Directory from the “other” folder on the resource site.
#1 – You have clicked on the Logix Emulate application twice without giving the software time to open.
In this case, just click OK and wait a bit for the software to open.
#2 – Someone else has been on the computer and didn’t log off properly. In this case, you should
restart the remote computer and try again.
