Marina Martin, a young games tester
Most days I finish my homework and then I have to play computer games for the rest of the afternoon.
Yes, I have to! You see, I earn money by looking for mistakes in games.
I’ve always been crazy about computer games. My dad’s a journalist and my mum’s a
photographer, so there’s been a computer in the house since before I was born. I can remember playing
very simple games on it when I was less than five years old and my dad telling me to switch it off and
go outside.
I was online one day when I saw an advertisement from a video game company. They were looking
for young people to give their opinions about some of their new games. I contacted them but I wasn’t
old enough because I was 14.
Three years later, several companies now send me their games. I often spend hours on the same
game. I have to play it from start to finish several times, look at all the menus and try all the different
ways of playing it. While I’m doing this, I take notes and then write a clear email which the company
can understand easily.
You have to work quickly because the company often wants to sell their new game as soon as
possible. I may have to spend a lot of the weekend testing. However, I think I’m very lucky that my
hobby has become a job. Most of the time, I love it!

eating soup or vegetables, but my parents say they’re healthy, so I have them once a week.

TRANSCRIPTS
Part 1.
You will hear Ruben and his friend Amy talking about their computers. I’m going to sell this tablet of mine.
But you’ve only just bought it.
I know, but it was a mistake. I chose it because it was nice and small, but the camera’s not great and I can only
play a few of my games on it. How are you going to sell it? Well, I offered it to my brother, but he doesn’t want
it.
So, I’ll put an advertisement online. There’s a shop on my street that buys old phones and computers, but they
don’t pay much for them. How much do you want for it? Well, it cost me £300 and it’s nearly new, so I’d like
to get around £200.
If I do, I can spend £500 on a new laptop. You should get the laptop I’ve got. It’s got lots of memory and good
speakers, but the best thing is the screen.
It’s amazing for games. Sounds good. Have you got it with you? It’s at home.
Come round and see it this weekend. Sunday morning’s good for me. I’m busy all day Saturday and Sunday
afternoon.
Great. I’ll see you then.
Part 2.
Welcome to Georgetown Sports Camp. I’d like to give you some information: during your time at the camp you
will find fourteen different sports, five indoor activities and nine outdoor sports. If you want to do a sport, just
write your name on the lists of the sports you would like to do.
Now, clothes. For most sports you can just wear shorts and a T-shirt. As we do both indoor and outdoor sports,
make sure you have a pair of trainers with you, too.
Lunch is served at the snack bar from quarter past twelve and quarter to two. You will find sandwiches and
drinks to buy there, but if you want salad or fruit, you need to go to the little shop near the bus stop. Don’t eat
too much or you won’t be able to run and jump!
For each sport you do, you will get a mark and each mark goes into your final score. If you get over 190 marks
in total, you will get a tennis racket. The maximum score is 250 and those who get that score will win a
surfboard. I hope everything is clear.
Part 3.
Rob: Were you having a party in your flat last night?
Kim: What? I’ve got far too much college work to do to have time for parties.
Rob: So what was all that music?
Kim: Well, it helps me to think about my work.
Rob: I can’t believe it. It was loud enough for me to be able to listen to it in my flat.
Kim: Oh, was it that loud? Did it disturb you?
Rob: Actually, it sounded quite nice - in the distance. I thought you had invited some friends round. I was
thinking, why didn’t she ask me and feeling sorry for myself.
Kim: But when I have friends in, I don’t play loud music, because then we can’t have a proper conversation.
Rob: Yes, I agree. But then I do like something quiet in the background when we’re talking. Of course, it’s the
opposite when I’m trying to study.

TAILIEUDIEUKY © 2024 4
Kim: You need complete silence, do you? With me, what happens is that I’m listening to the traffic if it’s too
quiet.
Rob: No, that doesn’t worry me, I can shut that out. But I find if there’s music, I’m paying attention to that
instead of the work.
Kim: And what part of the day do you work best?
Rob: I don’t have much choice; usually it has to be in the evening, although really I’m a morning person. But I
have to go into college all day most days.
Kim: I’m useless in the mornings. But I can work right through from the early evening till the next morning if I
have to.
Rob: Oh, I could never do that! I always need about three nights to recover if I miss a night’s sleep.
Kim: Anyway, let me know if the music keeps you awake.
Rob: I’m sure it won’t.
Now listen again.
Part 3.
Test 4. Listening. Part 4. Look at the six sentences for this part. You will hear a conversation between a woman,
Kim, and a man, Rob, who live in the same block of flats.
Decide if each sentence is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, put a tick in the box under A for yes. If it is not
correct, put a tick in the box under B for no.
You now have 20 seconds to look at the questions for part 4. Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You
will hear the recording twice.
Were you having a party in your flat last night? What? I’ve got far too much college work to do to have time for
