Course Objectives and Scope:

The objective of this course is to investigate the fundamental concept of limit, continuity and
differentiability of real and vector valued functions. In addition, they learn vector analysis,
multiple integrals and their applications. This course develops the mathematical problem solving
skills of students. Generally, the engineering problems can be explained in the language of
equations. After completing this course, students should be able to check the nature and existence
of the solution of defined engineering problems. Students also learn to find the length, area, surface
area, volume, surface area of revolution.

Course Description:
Section A Sequences, Bounded Sequence, Monotonic Sequence, Limit of Sequence,
Convergent and Divergent Sequence, Series, Test for Convergence, Power Series,
Radius of Convergence, Limit, Continuity and Differentiability (Analytic
Definitions with simple examples); Rolle’s Theorem (Applications), Mean Value
Theorem (Applications) and Taylor’s Theorem (Applications); Successive
Differentiation: Leibnitz’ Theorem (without proof).
Section B Review of Vectors, Cylinders and Quadric Surfaces, Vector Functions of One
Variable and their Derivatives, Partial Derivatives: Chain Rule, Exact
Differentials, Gradient, Directional Derivative, Tangent Planes and Normals,
Maxima and Minima (Two Variables) including Lagrange’s Multipliers,
Asymptotes and Curve Tracing (Cartesian and Polar Form).
Section C Reduction Formulae, Multiple Integrals, Applications to Multiple Integrals to find
Length, Area, Surface Area, Volume, Surface Area of Revolution, Improper
Integral.

* MSC: Multi Section Course
Vector Fields, Surface Integral, Line Integral, Independence of Path, Conservative
Fields, Divergence, Curl, Green’s Theorem (Applications), Stokes’s Theorem
(Applications).

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Define limit, infinite series and sequences of partial sum of an infinite series,
Convergence and Divergence of an infinite series.
2. Relate the limit of a function at a point to the limit of a sequence at that point and tell
when a function will fail to have a limit at a point.
3. Define monotonic functions and find a connection between monotonicity of a function
and derivative of a function.
4. Demonstrate the concept of Divergence, Curl, Green’s and Stokes’s Theorem.
