A CASE OF SUB-SAHARA AFRICA AND IT’S DEVELOPMENT CONUNDRUMS

Sub-Saharan Africa is famous as one the regions in the world most hit by a multiplicity of
humanitarian crises that increases the region’s vulnerability to underdevelopment. Ranging
from Poverty, poor health, food insecurity, injurious retrogressive cultural practices,
illiteracy, and ignorance, environmental degradation, human insecurity, and natural and
manmade disasters; are among the myriad of issues meeting the criteria for qualifying to be
community concerns, and are synonymous with this region. Sub-Saharan African case is
unique in the sense that community concerns manifest themselves in various indicators
and dimensions thus disproportionately affecting the regions efforts towards realizing
sustainable development.
However, it is not all doom and gloom for the region as some governments and the United
Nation (UN) bodies like WHO, FAO, WFP, UNDP and UNEP, together with other
development partners have been working collaboratively to mitigate against the negative in
impact of these issues. The UN agencies have also as it is within their mandate lead in the
development efforts and also been instrumental in providing guidelines and frameworks for
approaching and addressing these challenges in the region. The greatest obstacle has
possibly been in uprooting the inherent causes of these issues that are strongly embedded in
to the social, cultural, economic, and political state and spheres of most of the countries.

b) Communities all over the world are confronted with a myriad of issues and problems.
Some of these issues and problems meet the criteria of qualifying to be community
concerns. Outline the criteria for identifying an issue as of a concern to community
(5marks)
2. a) One of the dimensions in which poverty has manifested itself in Sub-Saharan Africa is
Chronic Poverty and Transitory Poverty. Distinguish between these two dimensions of
poverty (4marks)
b) Poverty is basically the state where a number of poor people is by far more than that of the
people who can afford a decent lifestyle. Analyse FIVE inherent causes of poverty in sub-
Saharan Africa (5marks)
3. a) Highlight the FOUR components of food security under the WHO framework (4marks)
b) Outline FIVE measures that you would advise development partners put in place to mitigate
against Food insecurity in a typical sub-Saharan society (5marks)
4. Analyse FIVE indicators of poor health in a typical sub-Saharan community (5marks)
5. Outline the FIVE dimensions which determine the overall good health and wellness as
outlined in the WHO 1948 framework that a typical Sub-Saharan African country should
focus on to mitigate against poor health (5marks)
6. Examine FIVE ways in which injurious retrogressive cultural practices impacts
development in sub-Saharan Africa (5marks)
