Video 1: https://nsc.yuja.com/V/Video?v=9292559&node=39688853&a=117124516&autoplay=1
I give you the stock prices for each company in the video below. Use these prices.

The objective of this project is to apply a linear regression model to something that either trends
positively over time or negatively. For this project we will use the stock market. Although the
stock market does not necessarily follow a linear trend, we will pretend it does for the purposes
of this project.
Formatting requirements
1. Make sure you have a title page (APA style) In the case that you are not sure what that
looks like, just google it.
2. Paper should be Times New Roman, 12 font, single spaced with standard 1-inch
margins. SUBMISSIONS THAT ARE NOT TYPED WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
3. Delete the directions. However, you can keep the headings, introduction, methods, etc.
4. Make sure you have a reference page to cite all of the sources you used in your
introduction. You will need to cite at least 3 sources in your introduction.
5. Graphs should be done in Excel. Directions on how to download Excel to your home
computer are in the top module in the link (technology required for this course). Graphs
should be titled and axes should be labeled appropriately.

Data set (Scatterplot for correlation and regression): Data will come from looking up a stock
prices. Companies will be assigned to you to look up based on your last name.
Introduction
1. Introduce the topic.
a. Watch the video link below and look up information that might help you to
summarize the stock market. Include the following information:
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCFkWDdmXG8
➢ What is the stock market?
➢ Who is one of the most famous American Investors? What is his strategy
for investing? What advice does he give about investing?
➢ What is an index fund?
➢ Why is investing in the stock market risky? Cite your source.

b. Provide background information regarding your company. Cite at least 3

sources.
➢ Provide a brief history of the company.
➢ Who is the current CEO?
➢ What is the current share price? What is the 52 week range of the
company?
➢ How does the company make its money? In other words, what products
generate the most profit for the company? Make sure you look this
information up. The answer might surprise you.
➢ What is the future of the company? What future products does the
company plan to release?
Methods
2. Go to https://finance.yahoo.com/. Companies are assigned based on last name.
a. If your last name begins with the letter A-I, your company is Alphabet Inc.
(Google), (GOOG)
b. If your last name begins with the letter J-Q, your company is Meta
(Facebook), (META)
c. If your last name begins with the letter R-Z, your company is Walmart, WMT

3. Make a chart of your company’s share prices every December, from 2012-
2024
a. You should have 12 prices.

Example: Nike Shares from December 2012-2024

Year Price
2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
2018
2019
2020
2021
2022

Results
4. Plot your points on a scatter plot. Graphs should NOT be handwritten. Make sure all
graphs have a title with labeled axes. Data values should be displayed on the graph where
appropriate. If you need help with graphing and finding the correlation in Excel, see the
the video in last week’s module titled, “selected problem from 12.1-2.”
a. Find the correlation between the two variables (time and stock price).
b. Find the line of best fit and the regression equation.
c. Copy your graph to your paper.
d. Interpret the slope of your regression equation. Remember the slope is the rate of
change per unit. So did the stock price go up every year by a certain amount since
2010 or did it go down every year by a certain amount since 2010?
Discussion
5. This is where you analyze your data and bring your paper to a close. Refer to what you
wrote in your introduction. Were your results surprising.

➢ What is the stock selling for today?

➢ If the current trend continues, what might the price of the company be in 2027?
o Use your regression equation to determine this. Show your work in putting
the number into your regression equation.

What evidence do you have that the trend might continue or might not continue? Finish
this section by indicating open questions that remained after your paper and new
questions that emerged.
