separately – Fire Specialist

REGISTRATION

Worldwide - Based on two requirements :


- Academic entry level qualification (Educational Standard - Candidate)
- Minimum three years of practical / technical post qualification training at
the appropriate level for the category of registration concerned
(Competency Standard – Professional)

Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000 defines registration as follows:


• To achieve registration in any category, an applicant must:
– Satisfy the educational outcome as defined for the related candidate
category
– Demonstrate competence against standards determined by council for
the category

What is CPD?

CPD can be defined as the systematic maintenance,


improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the
development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of
professional and technical duties throughout a persons
engineering career.

Why CPD?

• CPD is linked to Renewal of Registration, which is a legal


requirement

• CPD is part of international engineering best practice

Renewal of Registration
ECSA is charged by the Engineering Professions Act (EPA), to
serve and protect the safety and health of the public by
establishing and maintaining minimum standards and
professional ethics.

Section 22 of the EPA (Act 46 of 2000) imposes a duty on


registered professionals to renew their registration as prescribed
by the Council.

Council prescribed that the renewal period is five [5] years.

Council linked Continuing Professional Development to Renewal.

Way Forward
• Roll out of registration for the sub-categories
• Teams of assessors have been trained
• Add more assessors to the pool
• ECSA are also offering discounted annual fees as follows:
– Year 1 – 40% discount on prescribed annual fee
– Year 2 – 20% discount on prescribed annual fee
– Year 3 – 0% discount on prescribed annual fee
• Conclude the Rational Design / Alternate Design feasibility
study to create new category for - Fire Specialist
