electrolysis. The purified water is mixed with sodium hydroxide where a concentration of 25% by wt
is prepared. The lye prepared is then heated to a specific temperature to increase the efficiency of
the electrolysis process as well as attain the operating conditions of the electrolyzer. Heating is
archived by using a shell and tube heat exchanger. After heating, it is fed to the electrolyzer where
during electrolysis, an electric current is passed through the water, causing it to split into hydrogen
and oxygen gases at the anode and cathode, respectively. After electrolysis, the gases are cooled
separately using plate and frame heat exchanger in order to attain the operating condition of the
next stage which is scrubbing. The purpose of scrubbing is to remove impurities in the gases such as
traces of NaOH. Oxygen gas being pure can be vented out and released to the environment.
Hydrogen on the other side is taken to a demister to remove any water droplets from the hydrogen
gas so as to reduce work to be done by the dryer. The gas is further dried in a dryer to remove any
residual humidity. Finally, a compressor is used to compress the hydrogen gas to reduce its volume
making it suitable for storage and transport. Compression causes rise in temperatures therefore a
plate and frame heat exchanger is used to lower the temperatures to room temperature.
