Worksheet 03
2) A small experiment was conducted to fit a multiple linear regression relating the yield
(y) to the temperature (x1), reaction time (x2) and concentration of one of the reactants
(x3). Two levels of each variable were chosen, and measurements corresponding to the
coded independent variables were recorded as follows.
i. Using the variables, estimate the multiple linear regression equation and
perform an analysis of variance to check the overall significance of the model.
ii. Apply stepwise regression technique and compare it with model observed by
part i).
Use the MINITAB software to obtain answers for question number 3 to 6
3) In a certain hospital the number of ventilator machines needed (during the pandemic
situation) follows normal distribution with mean 20 and the standard deviation 4. The
hospital administration doesn’t want to have a shortage for the ventilator machines
more often than 2.28% of the time. Then calculate the minimum number of ventilator
machines needed to the hospital?
i. What is the probability of getting at least three positive results from that sample?
ii. What will be the average number of positive results from that sample?
5) An inventory study determines that, on average, demands for a particular item at a ware
house are made 5 times per day. What is the probability that on a given day this item is
requested
6) Hospital administrators in large cities anguish about problems with traffic in emergency
rooms in hospitals. For a particular hospital in a large city, the staff on hand cannot
accommodate the patient traffic if there are more than 10 emergency cases in a given
hour. It is assumed that patient arrival follows a Poisson process and historical data
suggest that, on the average, 5 emergencies arrive per hour.
i. What is the probability that in a given hour the staff can no longer accommodate
the traffic?
ii. What is the probability that more than 20 emergencies arrive during a 3-hour
shift of personnel?
