Homework Sheet 10
submission: at the latest on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 10:00 am, via CMS

Problem 1 (4 points): Use the power series of sin in order to compute

sin(x) − x
lim .
x→0 x3

Problem 2 ((2+1+1)+3+2 points):

(a) Prove the following rules for general powers:
(i) For a ∈ R>0 and x, y ∈ R, we have ax+y = ax · ay and (ax )y = axy .
(ii) For a ∈ R>0 and x ∈ R, we have a−x = a1x .
(iii) For a, b ∈ R>0 and x ∈ R, we have (a · b)x = ax · bx .
(b) For a ∈ R>0 \ {1}, we consider the function fa : R → R, x 7→ ax . Show that fa is
strictly monotonic with image fa (R) = R>0 . Determine fa−1 : R>0 → R.

(c) Show that x1/n = n x for x √ > 0 and n ∈ N, where x1/n is a general power in the
sense of Definition 4.41 and n x is the n-th root defined in Example 2.15.

an xn be a power series with radius of convergence

Problem 3 (5 + 2 points): Let
n=0

an x n .
P
r ∈ (0, ∞) ∪ {∞}. We consider the induced function P : (−r, r) → R, x 7→
n=0

(a) Let r∗ ∈ (0, r). Prove that there exists a constant L > 0 such that
|P (x) − P (y)| ≤ L|x − y| for all x, y ∈ (−r∗ , r∗ ).
n−1
Hint: Prove that xn − y n = (x − y) xk y n−1−k for all x, y ∈ R and each n ∈ N.
P
k=0

(b) Deduce from part (a) that P : (−r, r) → R is continuous.

Hint: Use the result from Problem 1 on Classroom Sheet 9.

Problem 4 (4 points): Compose a diagram/mental map/concept map with at least 15 of

the following terms and corresponding cross references within this diagram:
function, injective, surjective, bijective, inverse function, continuous, sequence, Cauchy
sequence, subsequence, series, convergent, divergent, limit, accumulation point, lim sup/
lim inf, monotonic, supremum/infimum, real/rational numbers, field, compact, closed,
open, bounded, ε-neighborhood, power series, exponential function, logarithm
