ACTIVITY 1

INVESTIGATION:
1.1 It enables safe and efficient movement of people, materials, and equipment throughout
the mine.√

1.2 The winding house controls the movement of the mine's hoist and cage, lifting and
lowering miners, equipment, and materials through the mine shaft.√

1.3 A sheave wheel is a type of pulley wheel used to change the direction or speed of
a rope or cable, typically found in mine winding systems, serving to redirect and
control the movement of lifting equipment. √

1.4 A head frame is the structural framework at the top of a mine shaft that supports
the winding gear, including the hoist and winder, and provides a safe working
platform for miners to access the shaft and maintain the equipment. √

1.5 The legs on a head frame slope towards the winch to ensure that the frameremains stable
and upright, even as the winding drum moves up or down the shaft, by providing
counterbalance to the weight of the winding equipment and cables. √

1.6 The two parts of the lift that go down a mine are called the "cage" and the"skeleton" or
"travelling" lift. √

1.7 The cage carries the people or equipment down the mine, while the skeleton or
travelling lift supports the ropes or cables that power the movement of the cage. √

1.8 The second winch has a counter weight which aids with the support of the cage, along with
two sheave wheels moving in diferent direction. √√

1.9 The formula C = 2πr is the circumference of a circle, where C is the circumference and r is
the radius. Since we're given the diameter (6m), we need to find the radius first:

Radius (r) = Diameter / 2

= 6m / 2
= 3m √

Now, we can plug this value into the formula:

Circumference (C) = 2 × π × Radius √

= 2 × π × 3m
= 18.85m (approximately) √

So, the cage will drop approximately 18.85 meters for each single rotation of the drum

1.1.10 If the mine winch drum diameter is 6m, calculate how far the counterweight will lift for
each single rotation of the drum, use the formula C =2πr
(3)
Since the formula C = 2πr calculates the circumference of a circle, we can use it to find the
distance the counterweight will lift.

2
First, let's find the radius:

Radius (r) = Diameter / 2

= 6m / 2
= 3m √

Now, plug this value into the formula:

Circumference (C) = 2 × π × Radius √

= 2 × π × 3m
= 18.85m (approximately) √

Since the counterweight lifts the same distance as the cage drops, the answer is still approximately:

The counterweight will lift approximately 18.85 meters for each single rotation of the drum.

DESIGN SKILLS

2.1 Design brief with specifications and constraints.

2.1.1. Write the design brief: (2)

(Learners write according to their understanding, their own design brief)

2.1.2. List any 2 specifications: (4)

(Learners will write different specifications)

2.1.3. List any 2 constraints. (4)
(Learners write different constraints)

2.2 Use the space below to sketch two initial ideas (3-D Isometric) to meet the requirements given in
the scenario. Your generated freehand designs must include dimensions and labels. (5X2=
