Subjects and Predicates
Every sentence has a complete subject and a complete predicate.
The complete subject tells who or what the sentence is about. The subject is a noun. It is the
name of a person, animal, place, or thing. The complete subject includes ALL the words in the
subject.
Ex: Susan and Sarah bough me a nice dress.
The trip was amazing.
The complete predicate tells what the subject is or does. It is the action that the subject does.
The complete predicate includes ALL the words in the predicate.
Ex: The great teacher likes students.
My little brother is playing on the swings.

Kinds of Sentences
There are 4 kinds of sentences:( statement – question – command – exclamation ).
They all have to start with a capital letter.
A statement is a sentence that tells something. It ends with a period ( . ). It is also called
a declarative sentence.
Ex: I go to the club every Thursday.
A question is a sentence that asks something. It ends with a question mark ( ? ). It is also called
an interrogative sentence.
Ex: Where are you going?
A command is a sentence that tells someone to do something. It ends with a period ( . ). It
is also called an imperative sentence.
Ex: Shut the door.
An exclamation is a sentence that shows strong feelings. It ends with an exclamation mark ( ! ).
It is also called an exclamatory sentence.
Ex. Wow! We won the match.
