Name Editing and Proofreading

Get Ready to Proofread!


Errors in a written work can be very distracting for
readers. Proofreading means to check your work for
errors. Only when a text is error-free can your reader can
concentrate on what it is you are saying.

Editor use special markings to indicate that there is an error in a text.


Study the proofreading marks below. You will use them to proofread
the assigned text.

Use this checklist when you are proofreading, to make sure that you
have caught the most common errors:

Does every sentence begin with a capital letter?


Is every sentence a complete sentence?
Are proper nouns capitalized?
Do all subjects and verbs agree?
Are there any skipped or missing words?
Are all words spelled correctly?
Are any words repeated twice in a row?
Is every sentence correctly punctuated?
