Lecture 1-2 Mece380-2025W
Calendar description*3.5 (fi 8) (either term or Spring/Summer, 3-1S-0) Stress, strain, stress-strain relation, time-independent
and time-dependent behavior, virtual work and energy theorems, deformations, indeterminate systems,
matrix methods.
Objectives: Study advanced stress/strain analysis methods to examine load-carrying capacity of various
structures/structural components in terms of strength/stiffness criteria.
Textbook: Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity (4th, 5th, or 6th Editions), by A.C. Ugural and S.K.
Fenster, Prentice Hall.
Course Outline: Ugural, Chapters 1-3, 10, 5, 6. See attached course schedule for details.
Pre-requisite: MEC E 260, CIV E 270.
Examinations: Examinations are 'open book'. All calculators are allowed for the examinations. The exam must
be completed independently by students. Details of the exams will be discussed during the term.
Midterm Exam – 0930-1050, Thursday, February 13, 2025
Final Exam – 0830-1030, Tuesday, April 22, 2025 (to be confirmed)
Assignments: Weekly assignments will be posted on eClass. Students need to download the assignments,
complete and submit to eClass before the deadline.
Seminars: Problem solving sessions/worked examples/Quizzes
Suggested questions to be discussed will be posted on eClass before each seminar. There will
be four eClass-based open book quizzes during the seminars.
All quizzes will be eClass-based but all students must write the exams/quizzes in class in person. For midterm and
final examinations, samples will be provided before the exams. The final grade of the course will be determined based
on both the absolute mark and the mark distribution among students. (Note that if you miss the midterm examination,
for a valid reason, your final examination mark will be used to calculate the missing mark, i.e. equivalently the
missed weight will be transferred to the final examination.)
"Policy about course outlines can be found in §23.4(2) of the University Calendar."
"The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are
expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University
in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Code of Student
Behavior (online at https://www.ualberta.ca/governance/resources/policies-standards-and-codes-of-conduct/code-of-
student-behaviour.html) and avoid any behavior which could potentially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism,
misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result
in suspension or expulsion from the University."

Tentative Schedule
Assignments should be submitted to eClass no later than 11:59pm on the due dates. No late assignments
will be accepted - FOR ANY REASON. Please upload your assignments earlier to avoid problems caused
by potential network issues.
Assignments are not only exercises in solving problems, they are also exercises in developing clear, logical
and concise (written) presentation skills. Consequently, assignment solutions must be written neatly,
clearly demonstrating (logical) methods and arguments used to arrive at the final answers.
Graders may mark all or only selected questions for each assignment. Graders will be instructed to assign
a mark of ZERO to any solution which:
• Is not written in a clear and concise manner.
• Does not demonstrate a clear and logical approach/method used to arrive at the final answer.
