INTRODUCTION
Transportation is an important aspect of university life, influencing the daily routines and
experiences of students, faculty, and staff. Understanding transport patterns within a
university setting is crucial for optimizing campus infrastructure, promoting sustainable
practices, and enhancing overall efficiency. This assignment involves the statistical analysis of
transport patterns at Walter Sisulu University, aiming to check issues and improve
transportation services.

PLAN
The primary objective of this assignment is to analyse various aspects of transport patterns
within the Walter Sisulu University campus using statistical methods, which included surveys
and interviews. By investigating factors such as mode of transport, frequency, peak times,
and distances travelled, we seek to gain a broad understanding of how individuals move
from their residence to the university campus. Additionally, this analysis aims to identify any
trends or patterns that may exist within the data, providing valuable insights for developing
transportation services and promoting sustainable transport solutions.

METHODOLOGY
The assignment was given to our group which included 13 members, in which we decided to
split roles as to how we tackle this assignment. As mentioned in the plan above, we decided
to tackle this assignment by using interviews and surveys, so three members of the group
were given the role of overseeing the interviews and another three members who oversaw
the surveys, mostly students and some of the staff were interviewed and only students
participated in the surveys. The surveys were set in way that the information collected
would easily be represented graphically. Then we had members who would oversee taking
the information collected from the interviews and surveys and analysing them, this data
collected was also interpreted and analysed by most of the group members. This data was
relevant as it gave us insight as to how the university’s transport system truly affects the staff
and mostly the students, we find they are affected the most, which paves a way to find
solutions pertaining to the campus transportation patterns of Walter Sisulu University.

2
INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
Now the results gotten from the interviews and surveys were interpreted graphically using
pie charts and bar graphs, we received 31 responses in from the surveys, these
representations are shown and discussed below.

• The pie chart above represents the typical modes of transportation used to get from
the residences to the WSU campus, and we see that 77.4 percent of the staff and
students use the campus shuttle, which indicates that majority of the staff and
students rely on the university to provide transportation. This is one of the main
reasons why the transportation patterns need to be improved by the university itself.

3
• This pie chart represents the times taken for the modes of transportation to get to
the campus from the residences. As shown on the pie chart, majority of the
transportations take from 0 – 20 minutes to get to campus, which takes 54.8 percent
of the pie chart, but then again, those numbers can and cannot be improved, reason
being that some transportation may be affected by the distance travelled, which
might take longer to get to campus.

4
• This pie chart indicates that most of the students struggle to commit to their
academics since they are unable to balance their transportation needs. This sort of
thing results in students missing classes and being discouraged to participate in group
assignment, as we as a group struggled to meet up due to the transportation crises.

• Now this is a bar graph represents the challenges encountered due to campus
transportation. We devised that 58.1 percent of the challenges encountered was the
inconsistency of the transportation’s schedule and reliability, which can be improved
by the university if put into attention. Another challenge was the limited seating

5
capacity during peak hours, the increase in the number of transport systems can
solve this problem.

• We understand from this pie chart that transportation is in much demand during the
hours 07:00 - 09:00, which is reasonable as it gives students a chance to still reach
the campus if they were unable to meet to 7am mark.

• This is another graphical representation of the challenges pertaining to the

transportation patterns of WSU but represented in a pie chart. In which we discussed
that the only way to solve this issue is if the university provides more campus
shuttles.

6
We also decided to ask the students and staff members how the campus transportation can be
improved, and these were their responses:

In your opinion, how could campus transportation be improved in the future?

1. Ensure that services will arrive on time to meet different schedules.
2. They could ensure that students feel comfortable and safe while travelling to
and from campus.
3. Better transportation services
4. Transports should wait for students at the parking area, especially when the
weather conditions are terrible.
5. Residences should have more than one transport, depending on how many
students leave at those residences.
6. If campus transportation collected students frequently, there would be no
problems with extended travel times due to traffic.
7. Services must be fully served.
8. Shuttles/buses should be two or more at a time so that there will be enough
seats for students and all the students will be able to arrive on time on their
lectures.
9. Shuttles numbers should be increased and there must be always a transport
available in the residence all the time.
10. Increase number of shuttle/buses.
11. Increase shuttles/buses.
12. They could just use buses instead of taxis so every student can have a seat
available.
13. Always manage time.
14. They must increase number of buses.
15. Prove more transports for students.
16. Improving Customer Satisfaction & Safety
17. Add number of buses that transport the student.
18. They must be strict in time.
19. They must use government bus also.
20. Transport must be provided anytime you ask.
21. Add more buses.
22. We must add number of transports for students.
23. They must add number of buses that transport the student.
24. Transport must be available anytime.
25. To normalise their time
26. Add number of transports
27. School should be different for different people during different course, so that,
not everyone is on their way to school at 8 am.

7
28. We may have more than 2 transport per residence.

29. They must invent large school buses that can carry large number of students.

30. We at least need taxis to transport us, to avoid over loading of students.

31. First year only should live on campus.

8
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this assignment has uncovered valuable insights into transport patterns within
Walter Sisulu University campus through statistical analysis. By investigating various aspects
of transportation activity, we have contributed to the development of campus infrastructure,
improvement of transportation services, and promotion of sustainable mobility practices.
Through careful analysis and interpretation of data using graphical representations such as
the pie charts and bar chart we displayed, this assignment has provided actionable
recommendations for improving the overall transportation experience within Walter Sisulu
University’s community.

LIMITATIONS
• The sample size, as we could not interview a high number of people.
• Inability to interview drivers, since during this assignment there was a strike which
concerned the drivers.
• Inability to interview the management of the transport association, this would have
given us a deeper understanding of the transport system of the university.

REFERENCES
Unfortunately, we were unable to get any references as we only interviewed and use surveys
for this assignment. Also, since the people we interviewed and surveyed requested to
remain anonymous.

WHAT WE LEARNT
We learnt that the campus transportation patterns of WSU still need a lot of improvements,
and most of all we also learnt that team work is important when given a group assignment
as without us working together the completion of this assignment would not have been
possible.
