CHAPTER 1

Smart Rebar Corrosion Sensors: Real-Time Monitoring For Enhanced Durability and
Sustainability of Reinforced Concrete Structures

INTRODUCTION

1.1 General

Reinforced concrete structures are ubiquitous in modern infrastructure, but their durability is
threatened by rebar corrosion, leading to costly repairs, safety hazards, and environmental
concerns. Traditional inspection methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often
inaccurate. This research aims to develop innovative, embeddable Smart Rebar Corrosion
Sensors for real-time monitoring, enabling proactive maintenance and extending the lifespan of
reinforced concrete structures.

1.2 Background

Rebar corrosion is a major concern in civil engineering, causing:

1. Structural degradation

2. Safety risks

3. Economic losses

4. Environmental impact

Current inspection methods have limitations:

1. Visual inspection: subjective and time-consuming

2. Non-destructive testing (NDT): indirect and potentially inaccurate

3. Electrochemical methods: invasive and requiring expertise

1.3 Objectives

1. Design and develop embeddable Smart Rebar Corrosion Sensors

2. Investigate sensor performance in various environments

3. Develop data analysis algorithms for real-time corrosion detection
