Proper execution of any command depends on the tone and the pitch of voice
in which it is given. A properly delivered command is loud and distinct enough
to be clearly understood by every person. It is given with an inflection, a
cadence and a snap that inspire prompt, precise and simultaneous response
and assists in producing effective results with the minimum of effort and
strain. A word of command consists of two parts: ‘Cautionary’ and ‘Executive’.
As a guide and unless otherwise laid down, a cautionary word of command
gives on the march, should start as the left foot comes to the ground. It
should be drawn out during four paces and should be therefore ends as the
right foot comes to the ground.

Cariappa served in Iraq, Syria and Iran from 1941– 1942 and then in
Burma in 1943-1944. He spent many of his soldiering years in
Waziristan. He earned his 'Mentioned in Despatches' as DAA and QMG
of General (later Field Marshal) Slim's 10th Division. He was the first
Indian Officer to be given command of a unit in 1942. By 1944,
Cariappa was a Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel. After command, he
volunteered to serve in 26 Division engaged in clearing the Japanese

the British Empire.” In 1946, he was promoted as the Brigadier of the

Naval Headquarters initiated Operation Chutney on December 1, establishing


a surveillance and patrolling exercise to secure the maritime approaches. This
operation involved the deployment of two anti-aircraft frigates, Betwa and
Beas, which conducted a linear patrol along the Goan coast, positioned 13
kilometers away from the shore. Their primary objective was to monitor all
incoming and outgoing traffic, including shipping, aircraft, and personnel,
within the Portuguese enclaves. Additionally, they were authorized to
