Main Dimension design problems and solutions

1) A 125 Watt, 230Volts, 500 r.p.m motor has a full load efficiency of 50%. Calculate
the constant losses and power developed by the armature of the motor if the sum of
iron, friction and windage losses approximately 1/3rd of total losses.
Solution: Pout = 125W, V=230V, N=500 r.p.m , 𝜂 =0.5
1+2𝜂 1+2×0.5
Armature power developed 𝑃𝑎 = 𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡 ( 3𝜂 ) = 125 ( 3 ×0.5 ) = 166.6 Watt
From the problem data

1) Calculate the diameter and length of armature for a 7.5kw, 4 pole, 1000 rpm , 220V
shunt motor , Given : full load efficiency = 0.83; maximum gap flux =0.9 wb/m2 ;
specific electric loading = 30000 AC/m; filed form factor =0.7. Assume that the
maximum efficiency occurs at full load and the field current is 2.5% of rated current.
The pole is of square.

Solution:Pout = 7.5kW , P=4, N=1000 r.p.m , V= 220V, 𝜂 =0.83 , 𝐵𝑔 =0.9 wb/m2 ,

Pin = = = 9.03 kW
𝜂 0.83
Total loss = Pin- Pout = 9.03 - 7.5 = 1.536 kW

At maximum efficiency Constant loss = variable loss

Friction and windage loss & iron loss = Constant loss – Field copper loss
