Inland Waters
Inland water transport refers to the transportation of people, goods, and materials
via waterways such as rivers, canals, lakes, and other navigable bodies of water
that are located within a country's boundaries.
• India has over 5,000 km of navigable inland waterways under development.
• There are 111 officially notified Inland National Waterways (NWs) in India
identified for the purposes of inland water transport.

Sagarmala
▪ The Sagarmala Programme is an initiative by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and
Waterways to utilise India’s 7,500 km of coastline and advantageous location in the
Indian Ocean Region.
▪ The Sagarmala project was initially launched in 2003, but it was revived in 2014 by the
Modi government.
▪ The project has four pillars:
port modernisation,
port connectivity,
port-led industrialisation,
and coastal community development.
▪ The project has identified 14 Coastal Economic Zones (CEZs) and 30 link projects for
water resources development through inter-basin transfer of water.
▪ The project also includes the Sagarmala Seaplane Services, which will facilitate faster
and hassle-free travel across the country by using seaplanes on various routes.
The Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) for capacity augmentation of navigation on National
Waterway-1 (NW-1) is being implemented by Inland Waterways Authority of India under the
Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. the support of World Bank.
