HOMEWORK: Chapter 1 – Limits

Section 1.2

1) Use the graph to evaluate the given limits.

2) Use the graph to evaluate the given limits.
3) Use a table of values to evaluate the given limit numerically.

Section 1.3

4) Given that lim 𝑓(𝑥) = −6 and lim 𝑔(𝑥) = , evaluate each of the following limits using properties of
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 2
limits.
𝑓(𝑥)+𝑔(𝑥) 2
a) lim[𝑓(𝑥)𝑔(𝑥)] b) lim 6𝑔(𝑥)
c) lim[(𝑓(𝑥)) − 4𝑔(𝑥)]
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

a) -3 b) -11/6 c) 34
Evaluate each limit analytically (algebraically). If the limit does not exist, explain why.

16) Use the Intermediate Value Theorem to show that 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 − 𝑥 − 3 has a zero on the interval
[1,2]. Explain your answer.

Since f(1) = -2 and f(2)= 11, there must be a value of x between x = 1 and x = 2
where f(x) = 0. Between x = 1 and x = 2, the value of the function changes from
negative to positive. Since the function f(x) is continuous, this means that the
value of the function must be 0 between these two values of x.

20) Discuss the continuity of the function 𝑓(𝑥) = . Be specific – if the function is not
𝑥 2 −3𝑥−18
continuous, identify the type(s) of discontinuities and justify your answer(s) using limits.

The function f(x) is not continuous at x = -3 and x = 6. Removable at x = -3 since

1
there is a hole: lim 𝑓(𝑥) = − . Non-removable at x = 6 since there is a vertical
𝑥→−3 9
asymptote: lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = ∞ (You could also use the left side limit to justify this.)

27) (*NOTE: For parts c and d, use limits to justify your answer!)

27)a) x = -3 and x = -1/2

c) 𝑥 = − since lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = ∞

d) y = 2 since lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 2

28)

28) a) e-2
b) Show the three conditions here.
1 – f(0) exists: f(0) = 1
2 - lim 𝑓(𝑥) exists: lim− 𝑓(𝑥) = lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) = 1 (BE SURE TO SHOW THIS BY
𝑥→0 𝑥→𝑜 𝑥→𝑜
PLUGGING IN 0 TO BOTH)
3 - 𝑓(0) = lim 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥→0

c) 0

29)

29) a) a = 2, b = 3
b) 9
c) 5
