Spring19 Final Review Ch09

The document is a review for Math 222, focusing on differential equations and initial-value problems. It includes true/false questions, direction field sketches, Euler's method, solving differential equations, and population modeling. Additionally, it addresses a scenario involving the spread of an epidemic and the concentration of salt in a tank over time.

Math 222 Chapter 9 Review 04/29/19. [p.

1]

1. Determine whether the statement is true or false. Explain or give a counterexample.

(a) Each solution of the differential equation y 0 = −1 − y 4 is a decreasing function. [You do not need
to solve for y to answer this!]

(b) The function f (x) = ln x

x is a solution of the differential equation x2 y 0 + xy = 1.

dy y

(c) If y(t) is the solution of the initial-value problem dt = 2y 1 − 5 , y(0) = 1, then lim y(t) = 5.
t→∞

2. (a) Sketch a direction field for the differential equation y 0 = xy . Then use it to sketch the four solutions
that satisfy initial conditions y(0) = 1, y(0) = −1, y(2) = 1, and y(−2) = 1.

(b) Check your work by solving each differential equation explicitly.

Math 222 Chapter 9 Review 04/29/19. [p.2]

3. (a) Use Euler’s method with step size 0.2 to estimate y(0.4) where y(x) is the solution of the intial-
value problem
y 0 = 2xy 2 , y(0) = 1.

(b) Find the exact solution of the differential equation and use it to find the exact value of y(0.4).

Solve the differential equation:

4. y 0 = xe− sin x − y cos x

1
5. x2 y 0 − y = 2x3 e− x
Math 222 Chapter 9 Review 04/29/19. [p.3]

Solve the initial-value problem:

6. (1 + cos x)y 0 = (1 + e−y ) sin x, y(0) = 0

7. Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of curves y = ekx where k is a constant.

dP
8. (a) Write the solution of the initial-value problem = 0.1P − 0.00005P 2 , P (0) = 100 and use it
dt
to find the population when t = 20.

(b) When does the population reach 1200?

Math 222 Chapter 9 Review 04/29/19. [p.4]

9. A tank contains 100L of pure water. Brine that contains 0.5 kg of salt per liter enters the tank at a
rate of 10 L/min. The solution is kept thoroughly mixed and drains from the tank at 13 L/min. What
is the concentration of salt in the tank after 6 minutes?

10. One model for the spread of an epidemic is that the rate of spread is jointly proportional to the number
of infected people and the number of uninfected people (If A is jointly proportional to B and C, that
means A = kBC for some contant k).
In an isolated town of 5000 inhabitants, 160 people have the disease at the beginning of the week,
and 1200 have it at the end of the week. How long does it take for 80% of the population to become
infected?
