Conic Section Parabola
Conic Section Parabola
In this lesson, we'll delve into the conic section known as the parabola. We'll
cover its definition, standard forms, key features, methods for graphing, and
real-world applications.
1. Definition of a Parabola
Vertex: The vertex of a parabola is the point where the parabola changes
direction.
Axis of Symmetry: The axis of symmetry is a vertical line that passes
through the vertex of the parabola
Focus and Directrix: These are important features of a parabola that help
define its shape and position. The focus is a fixed point inside the
parabola and the directrix is a fixed line outside the parabola. The
distance from any point on the parabola to the focus is equal to the
distance from that point to the directrix.
Latus Rectum: a line segment passing through its focus and perpendicular
to its axis.
5. Equations
Vertex @ origin
o 𝑦 2 = 4𝑝𝑥
o 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦
Standard Form
o (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ)
o (𝑥 − ℎ)2 = 4𝑝(𝑦 − 𝑘)
General Form
o 𝐶𝑦 2 + 𝐷𝑥 + 𝐸𝑦 + 𝐹 = 0
o 𝐴𝑥 2 + 𝐷𝑥 + 𝐸𝑦 + 𝐹 = 0
Sample Problems:
Seat Work:
1. For the parabola given by the equation 𝑦 = −2(𝑥 − 3)2 + 4. What are the
coordinates of the vertex, Focus, and directrix?
2. Consider the equation 𝑥 = 4(𝑦 − 2)2 + 8. Which direction does the parabola
opens? And what is the length of the Latus Rectum?
3. For the parabola represented by the equation 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 5,What are the
coordinates of the focus if the parabola opens upwards?
4. Sketch the graph of the parabola 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 12𝑥 + 26.
