You are provided with a plane mirror, mirror holder, thumb pins, drawing board, plain
sheets and optical pins. Carry out the following instructions, using the diagram above
as guide.
1. Measure and record the length L of the plane mirror.
ii. Place the mirror vertically in the mirror holder on a sheet of paper and draw its
outline MM.
iii.Remove the mirror and mark a point 0 at the middle of MM’ and draw a normal ON
at O.
iv. Draw a line XO such that MOX = B = 70o
v. Fix two pins at P1 and P2 on the line XO
vi. Replace the mirror on MM’ with the reflecting surface facing the pins
vii. Looking into the reflecting surface, fix two other pins P3 and P4 such that the
pins appear to be in a straight line with the images of the pins P1 and P2
viii. Remove the pins and the mirror. Draw a line to join points O, P3 and P4
produced to Y
ix. With 0 as centre, draw a semi-circle of radius equal to half MM’ to meet OX at A
and 0Y at B
x. Draw a line from B to meet MM’ perpendicularly at D
xi. Measure and record OBD = ∝ and OD = Z
xii. Evaluate Sin∝= Q
xiii. Repeat the procedure for β = 60o, 50o, 40o and 30o.In each case, measure and
record the corresponding values of ∝ and Z. Also evaluate Q.
xiv. Tabulate your readings.

You are provided with a rectangular block, a drawing board, drawing sheets, four optical
pins and other necessary materials. Use the above diagram as a guide to perform
the experiment.
i. Measure and record the width of the block
ii. Draw the outline ABCD of the block on a drawing sheet. Mark a point, Q on AB
such that AQ=1.5cm. draw the normal RQT as shown in the diagram above
iii. Draw a line UQ making an angle i=10o with the normal RQT.
iv. Insert pins P1 and P2 on the line UQ. Look through the side DC of the block and
insert two other pins, P3 and P4 which appear to be in a straight line with the
images of P1 and P2.
v. Remove the block and mark the positions of P3 and P4 and extend it to meet DC
at E.
vi. Produce a line UQ to meet DC at point F. draw a straight line EQ
vii. Measure and record the angle r, length EF=d and evaluate tani , tan r ∧V ¿ ¿
viii. Using different outlines of the block, repeat the procedure for i = 20, 30, 40 and
50. In each case, measure and record r, d and evaluate tan i, tan r ad V.
ix. Tabulate your results
x. Plot a graph with d on the vertical axis and V on the horizontal axis
xi. Determine the slope S of the graph.

rule and a screen. Using the diagram above as guide, carry out the following
instructions
i. Place the object O and the screen S on opposite sides of the converging lens L.
