What's Going On?: Ella Oma

Bella Roma Pizza in Brooklyn is celebrating one year in business. Originally from Windsor, owners Neil and Darlene Pryde expanded their popular pizzeria to Brooklyn last year. The Prydes had considered opening a location in Brooklyn as they live nearby in Scotch Village. They are happy to be living and working in Brooklyn and want to remain in the community. Bella Roma continues to use high quality, traditional recipes at both their Windsor and Brooklyn locations.

What's Going On-Pedia

Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day, which is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It's date is linked to Easter therefore its date changes on an annual basis. This year it falls on February 21. Next year it will be on February 12. In Poland this celebration falls on the Thursday preceding Ash Wednesday and is called Fat Thursday. Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the 40-day fasting season of Lent. Newport Pump Systems

I spied a plot of green grass that was sparkling with snow a few days ago. How long before the snow softly reappears? How can we possibly know? I spied a tractor pulling an aromatic manure spreader back and forth over fields. If the aroma from it is an indication bountiful will be the crop it yields. I spied a big black car slowly making its way along a snow covered road. The driver was surely thanking his lucky stars that highway salt had been sowed. I spied a shiny gray cat pussyfooting its way to a neighbors house. Do you suppose it could be hot on the trail of a frisky little mouse?

PRYDE IN OUR COMMUNITY:

BELLA ROMA PIZZA CELEBRATES ONE YEAR IN BROOKLYN
by Heather Desveaux Open for over 25 years, Bella Roma Pizza is considered Windsors cornerstone Pizzaria. Under the present-day ownership of Neil Pryde and his wife Darlene, Bella Roma continues to expand on its original recipes providing high quality food to both West Hants residents and visitors. Last year, the Prydes also expanded their reach by opening a second restaurant in Brooklyn adjacent to Clover Farm. We had always considered being in Brooklyn because we live in Scotch Village, but it became more of a reality when people started asking us to be here, says Pryde. Were really happy to be living and working here, and we want to stay here. Its our home. We all know the buy local mantra, but not all buying local is created equal, according to Pryde. You can spend your money locally but it still can leave the community if the business owner doesnt live there or buy their supplies there," he says. "So initially you are buying local, but that money is not re-invested locally." Pryde says when you buy from an independent, locally-owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms which in turn strengthen the communitys economy. We source pretty much all of what we use locally, he says. Including our employees to help run the shop for us. Currently Bella Roma employs eight people who share shifts between Windsor and Brooklyn stores. We are fortunate to have little turn over in our staff, too, says Pryde, There are four of us with a total of almost 60 years in the Windsor store alone. International Food with local flavour: Bella Roma Pizza owner Neil Pryde prepares a wide variety of Italian and Greek food in Brooklyn and Windsor. [Photo by Avard Woolaver].

Where we live, eat, shop and have fun all add up to make a community. It's all of our one-of-a-kind businesses and people which make our communities home. Happy first anniversary in Brooklyn Bella Roma!

All of our recipes, from our pizza sauce made from over 20 natural ingredients, to the dough made fresh in our stores, is prepared exactly as the Marcelli family taught us, the way they were taught in Rome," Pryde says. "Generations of blending fresh, natural ingredients results in a goodness you can really taste. You feel better after eating good-for-you food." Despite a world-wide web of purchase choices, meals are one of the few things people need daily they cant buy online and have delivered at least not rurally. However, people will travel the extra half hour it takes to get a good meal, particularly if it is a unique international menu choice they cant get from another local source. We all know Hants County has the best local suppers put on by the community halls and fire departments. We may not have a lot of restaurants in the county but residents are definitely not starved for choice when they dont want to make a meal themselves, says Pryde. We are open seven days a week, he adds. Although pizza, subs and donairs are the obvious most popular dishes, Bella Roma also has a full menu of choices including vegetarian dishes, salads and some original gourmet pizzas on white or whole wheat dough. They also cater to anyone with special food needs, such as allergies and lactose intolerance. More and more people have special food needs, says Pryde. People today are striving for a cleaner, more local, fresher diets. Every dish we offer is made from scratch using authentic oldworld recipes sourced through our personal Italian and Greek connections with additive-free ingredients

You can spend your money locally but it still can leave the community if the business owner doesn't live there or buy supplies there.
