Part 1 Essay

Nowadays, there is an ongoing issue with our resources almost finishing.

Energy, fuels, money must be saved, and this decision has to be made even in
the smallest communities. Therefore, what is there to be done when it comes to
local libraries?

Firstly, cutting costs must be done as severe as possible to be effective.

However, an extreme measure would be closing libraries to avoid the expense
of utilities, bills, salaries, purchasing new books or different products needed. It
is not efficient, as it does not compensate with the overall impact on the
community: many students need the free access to materials for their studies and
some cannot afford to buy books. Even if an online platform that offers a virtual
version of a library’s resources is implemented instead, many might not know
how to use it and many might prefer paper over screen.

Secondly, trained and librarians are useful when it comes to managing this
institution. In contrast, voluntary assistants are inexperienced, but learn fast and
have a way of adapting to situations. By hiring them, a symbiotic relationship
forms: the volunteer learns more about the responsibility, work conditions, what
this kind of job requires, and uses this experience during his/hers future career
or in his/hers resume, while the employer saves money on salaries.

All in all, I believe allowing volunteers the opportunity of managing a library

is the right move to make in economizing, as it benefits all parts and is a
compromise between the closure of a physical institution and the high-cost of
normal functioning.
