Lesson No. 7 - Construction Engineering and Management

Construction engineering involves the planning, execution, and maintenance of structures, ensuring that project objectives are met within time, cost, and quality parameters. Effective project management relies on scheduling techniques like Gantt charts, CPM, and PERT, as well as proficient human resources and technology. Construction engineers oversee the entire project, ensuring compliance with designs, managing resources, and addressing any issues that arise.

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

AND MANAGMENT
CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
• This civil engineering branch deals with the planning,
construction and maintenance of structures.

• Construction engineering is the planning and execution of

designs from site development, environmental, structural,
transportation and structural engineers.

• Construction engineering brings the paperwork design to

reality. Time, Cost and Quality are tangible parameters of
construction engineering.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT
• A project can be considered to be any series of activities and tasks
that:
1. Have a specific objective to be completed within certain
specifications
2. Have defined start and end dates
3. Have funding limits
4. Consume human and nonhuman resources (i.e., money, people,
equipment)
PROJECT LIFE CYCLE
• Successful project management can then be defined as
having achieved the project objectives:
oWithin time
oWithin Cost
oAt the desired performance
oWhile utilizing the assigned resources effectively and
efficiently
oAccepted by the customer
CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULING TECHNIQUES
• Gantt chart- This is represented by the graph or bar chart with a
specific bar for activities in the project that shows the passage of
time. Gantt chart limits a clear indication of interrelation between the
activities.
• CPM- Critical path method was developed for industrial projects
where activity times are generally known.
• PERT- Program evaluation and review technique were developed for
R&D projects where activity times are generally uncertain. Its prime
objective is taking the shortest possible time.
• Microsoft projects- All the work is performed on the computer
memory and changes can be saved only when the program is asked to
operate.

CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM)
PROJECT EVALUATION REVIEW TECHNIQUE (PERT)
MICROSOFT PROJECTS
WHY SCHEDULE PROJECTS?
1. To calculate the project completion
2. To calculate the start or end of a specific activity
3. To expose and adjust conflict between trades or subcontractor
4. To predict and calculate the cash flow
5. To evaluate the effect of changing purchasing orders
6. To improve work efficiency
7. To resolve delay claims, this is important in critical path method
8. To serve as an effective project control tool
GOOD SCHEDULING SYSTEM
1. Human Factor: a proficient scheduler or scheduling team.
2. Technology: a good scheduling computer system (software
and hardware)
3. Management: a dynamic, responsive, and supportive
management

If anyone of the above is missing, the system will fail.

CONSTRAINTS OF THE PROJECTS
RESOURCES
CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
• Construction engineers will supervise field work during the
entire project.

• They must ensure that the plans that have been designed by
other engineers are implemented to their exact
specifications.

• They are in a sense a cross between an engineer and

manager as they will oversee the project from start to finish
and handle any problems that come up throughout the
duration of the project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Construction Engineer is responsible for :
1. Directing and planning the construction project
2. Conducting inspections
3. Engaged in investigation
4. Overseeing the project
5. Select the materials used in the construction process
6. Analyzing results
7. Sees that the entire construction process takes place
efficiently.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
8. May alternate between an office and outdoor work
environments.
9. Responsible for reviewing project finances and keeping
schedules on time.
10.Ensure the site sanitation and cleanliness.
11. Liaise with other government agencies and local
authorities on the implications of the construction.
12.Solve the construction problems efficiently.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
13. May work with contractors and construction workers
14. Address the concerns of the workers and advise them on
the subject of the construction process
15.Inform their employer about the progress in construction.
16.Provide quality control and quality assurance to make sure
that the purposes of the project are achieved.
17.Obtain the materials required for construction and check
them.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
18. Selecting equipment
19.Building temporary structures
20. checking and modifying plans and specifications for
constructability, efficiency, and safety.
21.Managing subcontractors works
22.Utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
