Genetics Assignment

Gregor Mendel's experiments with pea plants established the basis of genetics by examining traits such as flower color and seed shape. He formulated the laws of segregation and independent assortment, which explain how traits are inherited and segregated during reproduction. Mendel's work, initially unrecognized, is now fundamental to the field of genetics and our understanding of heredity.

COURSE TITLE: MICROBIAL GENETICS
QUESTION : Summarize the pdf in your own words and
understanding.

Gregor Mendel’s experiments laid the foundation for genetics as a scientific field. He focused on
plant traits, particularly using pea plants due to their clear characteristics—like flower color, seed
shape, and pod color—and the ability to control their pollination effectively.

Mendel conducted crosses between plants with differing traits, such as tall and short plants, and
carefully noted the traits of their offspring. His pivotal findings led to the formulation of the laws of
dominance and recessiveness. He discovered that certain traits consistently appeared in specific
ratios over successive generations.

Mendel’s laws of inheritance are articulated as follows:

1. Law of Segregation: Each organism carries two alleles for each trait, which segregate
during gamete formation. This means offspring inherit one allele from each parent.
2. Law of Independent Assortment: The inheritance of one trait does not influence the
inheritance of another, indicating that alleles for different characteristics are passed on
independently.

Although initially overlooked, Mendel’s principles became crucial to our understanding of heredity
and form the foundation of modern genetics.
