GENERAL
MATHEMATICS Solving
………… Exponential
Equations
Exponential Equation
An exponential equation is an
equation involving exponential
expression that can be solved for all
x values satisfying the equation.

EXAMPLES:
1. 121 = 11𝑥
2. 3𝑥 = 9𝑥−2
Parts of Exponential Equation

𝑥
11 = 121

For any real numbers x and y, and rational numbers
Laws of Exponent m, n, p and q; the following equations are true:

𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑚 > 𝑛
a. 𝑥 0 =1 d. 𝑥 𝑚 𝑛
÷ 𝑥 =𝑥 𝑚−𝑛

1 1 g. 𝑚 = 𝑞 𝑚𝑝
b. 𝑥 1 = x 𝑒. 𝑥 −𝑛
= 𝑛 ; −𝑛 = 𝑥 𝑛
𝑥 𝑥 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑞 > 1

𝑚 𝑛 𝑚+𝑛 𝑚 𝑛 𝑚𝑛 𝑥𝑚 𝑛 𝑥 𝑚𝑛
c. 𝑥 ⦁ 𝑥 = 𝑥 f.(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 ; =

SOLVING
EXPONENTIAL EQUATION

• One-to-one Property of Exponential

Functions states that in 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒃𝒙 , 𝒊𝒇
𝒙𝟏 ≠ 𝒙𝟐 then 𝒃𝒙𝟏 ≠ 𝒃𝒙𝟐 . Conversely, if
𝒃𝒙𝟏 = 𝒃𝒙𝟐 , then 𝒙𝟏 = 𝒙𝟐 .

• This property paves the way in

understanding how to solve exponential
equation.
One-to-One Property of Exponential
Functions

If 𝒃 𝒙𝟏
=𝒃 𝒙𝟐

then
𝒙𝟏 = 𝒙𝟐
EXAMPLES Solve for the value of x :

𝒙+𝟏
𝟏. 𝟒 = 𝟔𝟒 𝒙+𝟑
𝟒. 𝟖 = 𝟏𝟔 𝟐+𝟑𝒙

𝟒𝒙 𝒙+𝟏
𝟐. 𝟑 =𝟗 𝟏 𝒙
𝟓. = 𝟑𝟐
𝟑. 𝟗 𝟑𝒙
= 𝟐𝟕 𝟐
