Desktop computers: Desktop computers are designed for a desk or
table. Desktop computers are made up of separate components. The
main component, called the system unit or CPU. Other components,
such as the monitor, mouse, and keyboard, connect to the system unit.
Laptops
Laptops are lightweight mobile PCs with a thin
screen. Laptops can operate on batteries, so you
can take them anywhere. Laptops combine the
CPU, screen, and keyboard in a single case.
Tablet PCs
Tablet PCs are mobile PCs that combine
features of laptops and handheld computers.
They can also convert your handwriting into
typed text.

Data vs Information
Data: It means raw facts and figures. For eg, 'Ram', 4101,'A'are data.
Information: Data are summarized in various meaningful ways to form
Information.

We must understand that what goes in computers is data and what
comes out of them is Information.
BASIC COMPUTER ORGANIZATION
A computer system consists of mainly three basic units namely input
unit, central processing unit and output unit. Central Processing unit
further includes Arithmetic logic unit, Memory unit and control unit, as
shown in figure below
Input Unit:
The input unit is used for entering data and programs into the computer
system by the user for processing.
Output Unit:
The output unit is used to present soft and hardcopy of information.
Memory Unit:
The Memory unit is used for storing data and instructions before and
after processing.
Central Processing Unit (CPU):
CPU is the brain of the computer. It carries out the instruction and gives
orders to the other parts of the computer. It is made of 3 parts, namely

Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)
Memory Unit (MU)
Control Unit (CU)
Peripherals:
The Peripherals are the devices that surround the CPU.
Example: keyboard, mouse, speakers, printers, monitors etc. are
peripherals.

In Schools
Teachers and the school staff use computers for the following
purposes:
v Preparing lesson and projects.
v Preparing report cards.
v Preparing time table and date of sheet for the exams.
v Keeping the records of students and teachers.
v Keeping the records of school fees and other expenses.
Students also use computers. They use the computers for the
following:
v Preparing projects.
v Learning different subjects.
In Offices
In Offices, Computers are used for the following purposes:
v Maintaining office records.
v Typing and printing documents.
v Communicating through E-mails and Tele conferences.
In Medicine
Computers are widely used in the field of medicine. Doctors and
hospital staff take a lot of help of computers in their tasks.
v Computers are used to make medical reports.
v Computers are used to maintain medical records of patients for
future reference.
v Computerized equipment are also used for medical tests and

In Banks
Computers help the bank people in many different ways. Some of them
are as follows:

v Online enquiry of customer's account balance.
v Updating account balance and calculating interest.
v Printing customer's account statements
v Operating Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), which are machines
installed outside the bank that enable customers to withdraw money
at any time.
In Shops and Hotels
In shops and hotels, computers are used for the following purposes:
v Preparing bills.
v Maintaining the records of the item available in the shop and their
prices.
In Publishing Books and Newsletters
In publishing, Computers are used for the following purposes:
v Typing the contents.
v Setting the contents and designing the page.
v Drawing and colouring of pictures, tables and graphs.
Using computers to create books and newsletters is called desktop
publishing.
At Airports and Railway Stations
Computers are used at airports and railway stations for the following
purposes:
v For booking a ticket.
v Checking the availability of tickets.
v For knowing arrival and departure timings of trains or planes.
v Printing and issuing tickets element
The computer updates all the information immediately and displays the
latest status.

Storage Device:
The device which is used to store data and information in a computer
system is called storage device. The storage devices are classified into
two main types. They are primary memory and secondary memory.

Hard Disk
The hard disk is a device that a computer uses to
store information.
The hard disk is located inside the computer case.

Optical disk
Optical disk is an electronic data storage
medium, used to store information.
Two main types of optical disks are CD and
DVD.
a) CD - Compact Disk Read
b) DVD - Digital Versatile Disc
Drive
Drive is a device through which CDs and DVDs are inserted for reading
and writing operations. The drive used to insert a CD is called a CD
drive.
Flash Drive
A flash drive is a small external storage device.
A flash drive can be plugged into a USB
(Universal Serial Bus) port of a computer. More
commonly used sizes of Flash drive vary from
1 Gigabytes - 64 Gigabyte.
